Agreed, they went for it and came up a little short. Had they won, the tune would be a little different. I liked those trades at the time given the team's goal, they just didnt quite work out

Instead of people bashing Gillis, he'd still be in charge and there would be statues of him and AV outside the rink.

I'd rather my team go for it when they are in that window and make trades for now sacrificing youth than be too afraid to make trades that will look bad years later ...easy to critique now that they didn't win

I think they might not be in as much of a bind if as vanek will be gone and if franzen doesn't do something more than sit in the press box injured he won't be protected either

They will be an interesting team to watch though, they have several good NHL defensemen, both old and young. Plus up front they have the likes of Nielsen (NMC), Zetterberg, Abdelkater, Tatar, Nyquist, Sheahan, Helm, Franzen and prospects like Mantha, pulkkinen, Athanasiou; cant protect them all. Depending on how Vegas wants to build, they would secure a good young player for the future or take solid NHL contributors

Funny thing was at the time of both the Booth and Ballard trades, I didnt think they gave up much to acquire them (probably because I didnt have much faith in a 1st round Canuck pick turning into anything ). I actually thought the Derek Roy trade was more of an overpayment than both of those and I liked them getting Roy (though another bust)

I say Sutter gets all the tough defensive assignments this year which should free Horvat up with some easier match ups. That should help his offensive numbers.

It will be interesting to see if he does. Last year was obviously a small sample but he actually got a lot of offensive starts. I wonder if that was because they were playing Virtanen with Sutter

WD has said he doesn't like to match up either.

Honestly I don't know, but I would have to imagine the value is/will be lowering due to their cap situation and the expansion draft. I think a package for Tatar could work but it would have to include a 2nd rounder for sure plus maybe Sbisa(do they need D?) and maybe a mid tier prospect.

EDIT: scratch Sbisa from that deal, they wouldn't want his cap hit.

I just read an article saying that apperently they can put players on LTIR the day before the season starts, I had thought you couldn't until the season started.

According to that article they won't have cap issues as Franzen and Vitale are not expected to be able to play at all and Pulkkinin will be on LTIR while recovering from surgery.

I think no doubt they lose a Defenceman come expansion and it will be interesting to see if they show loyalty and protect Kronwall at 38 or if they protect Marchenko.

If it was me I would protect Zettersberg, Nielsen, Tatar, Nyqvist, Abdelkader, Sheahan and Helm for forwards

Green, Dekeyser and Marchenko for D nd Mrazek.

That means one of Kronwall, Eriksson, Jurco, Athanasiou, Pulkkinin or Glendenning gets picked. They have the depth to lose a young forward and even if the lose Kronwall, I don't know if it would be a huge loss at that point.

Fair enough and in retrospect, I would probably agree but I doubt many here even knew Hutton's name when Benning took over.

The cupboards certainly look better at this point.
