Two young guys like that on 3rd pairing could actually be ideal.
Even if Davidson doesn't drastically improve, but plays like he did last year, and gets easier minutes, We've got half of a quality 3rd pair.
Nurse takes steps forward and it's potentially a pairing we can rely on to really make things happen. At both ends.

Really all comes down to how good the top pairing is, and how many tough minutes they can take away from fayne. Cause as hendo said- sekera is a real good dependable 3. Very comfortable with him on the 2nd pairing. But fayne is as bland as they come.
I even think his decent numbers are flattering as the guy does nothing particularly well. And often many things quite badly . If he's not at least being physical and clearing the net- he's dead weight

Davidson is undoubtedly more dynamic than fayne, but I still like the idea of evening out handedness, and allowing Davidson to insulate nurse

Fun idea - start up the all time Oilers Bomb squad roster consisting of players who were Oilers property that failed miserably:

LW Linus Omark

C Jason Bonsignore

RW Rob Schremp

LD Justin Schultz

RD Colton Teubert

G: Ty Conklin, Nicholai Khabibulin

We could probably run 4 solid lines on this roster...

Pretty sure you can do this for any team

Personally I'd like Nurse to play in the AHL and for the Oil to pick up a depth RH D to play with Davidson. The BBC needs a bit more seasoning.

Ya I don't think we're getting any more help on D from trade or free agency so that's what we're gonna be running. I would like to see us bring back Gryba as a #7 and another cheap vet as a #8 so Reinhart isn't gonna be spending time sitting in the pressbox watching. He needs to go play big minutes on the top pair in the AHL and continue to improve his skating.

Nurse needs to get way better but its possible. Davidson needs to stay as good as he was. Do that and the bottom pair becomes pretty solid.

Nurse is gunna take a baby step forward and Davidson is gunna take a step backwards (mostly offensively).

So what is the story on Reinhart? I haven't had the chance to see him play. I just remember him being drafted really high and being projected as a top pair guy.

Not sure I follow your thought process on this blog.

You don't think the defense is good enough but you think Klefbolm-Larsson is a fine top pairing, Sekera-Fayne are solid, and Davidson is amazing...

So... Nurse in the number 6 spot, if he makes the cut, is what you are concerned about?

If Taylor Chorney can hold down a number 6 spot on the president trophy winning Caps. I think we will be OK with Nurse as our #6 guy... if he makes the team.

Osterle and Reinhart can also step in and help in that #6 spot if Chiarelli is done tinkering... which I think the popular opinion is that he is not done tinkering.

#1 problem for this D will be staying healthy. After that I believe with only minor development the Oilers will have a slightly below average group of defenders. As opposed to a bottom 5 group we typically run.

Well, he's projected to play top pair minutes this year for an Oiler owned club. So he's basically living up to the promise.

I'm so tired of hearing how bad Nurse was last year and how he really needs to step up and make some big improvements .... the kid is just now 21 years old!! He should have yet to have ever played an NHL game on any other team not so desperate for a D-man!

Ya he will be better next year... and in two more he is going to be a beast. I think he can fill a #6 spot on this team pretty easily...

Much rather sign Gryba or Wiz and keep Oesterle up for 7th man duty. Buddy performed admirably in the big minutes he was forced into at the end of the year.

Overall, a pretty damn good blog... I didn't read any of it, but I did notice that there were plenty of words, and the paragraphs were pretty even in length, and separated quite nicely. Keep up the great work.
