You sure?....it's Monday today!
Hopefully one of Chiasson, Vey, Ferland, Poirier, or Shink comes in and proves themselves as a decent top 6 option out of camp. I'm not holding my breath though... |

Can't blame Gaudreau and Monahan for wanting less term...assuming Steinberg's right. Five / six years they're likely to be commanding north of $10million per. Those extra 2/3 years are going to cost. |

Working on everything you mentioned above is ideal. It just may come at the expense of his point totals. The Marner/Dvorak/Tkachuk line wasnt even fair last season. Looked like they were toying with the opposition. - Holy_Makinaw99
What if Marner's totals drop? Grow up. |

If Jokipakka turns into a legit top 4 defender this season do we trade him at the deadline instead of losing him to expansion?

I probably would, we for sure lose him in that scenario. The only way we should consider keeping him is if a couple of our forwards (ferland, shink, poirier) have breakout years and we are hoping that Jokipaka keeps Vegas from picking them instead.
If Janko is tearing up the AHL (or if he finds his way on to the team as a winger for now) do you think we should look at trading Backlund? I love the guy and everything, but;
A. He'll be due for a fairly substantial raise when his contract is up in two years.
B. If he has a good season his value may never be higher than it is now (he's has a good cap hit with term).
C. He's had some bad luck with injuries almost every year, that probably doesn't improve as he ages.

The only way you trade Backlund is if we get a top 6 right handed shot winger back in a deal! Otherwise no!

Agreed. A very solid two way centre in his prime. IMO, the Flames work to extend him this time next year. He seems happy hear so lock him up. Could be $5m for 5 years but that's okay to solidify the position. Just leaves less room to make mistakes on UFAs. |

I agree, that would be the target. Any thoughts on what some reasonable target would be? (teams that could use a centre and would actually trade us a RW).
Off the top of my head maybe:
Nichushkin
Simmonds
JVR (LW but could still work)
Be nice if we could steal Kucherov from TB, but they have enough space now to mach any offer sheet and they probably won't trade him.
Which brings us back to Ek's rumour about Hoffman (If Ottawa (frank)s up and goes to arbitration for a 1 year deal then his value drops significantly on the trade market). |

But do we really want to have ~17-18 mill tied up in 3 centres? I think if Janko proves to be even half as good as Feaster predicted we have to trade Backlund. It sucks because he was one of the few bright spots for draft picks during the Sutter era but wasting that much cap on our 3rd line centre isn't wise, no matter how good his possession numbers are. |

Dallas has seguin spezza

So we shouldn't waste that much money on centers but other teams trading for him should ? |

Giroux plays RW does he not?
Bozak and Kadri have been rumoured to be on the block for what seems like forever, if they decide to trade Kadri for D-help I could see them adding Backlund to be their 2c (dubas is noted for being an analytics nut so Backlund should intrigue him). Bozak isn't that good, he should be a 3c.
Dallas is in win now mode, adding a player of Backlunds calibre who has a low cap hit for 2 years helps them do that. Also gives them a replacement for Spezza who I could see them trying to trade in the last year of his contract (or if he regresses buying him out).
Philly's more of a pipe dream because I like Simmonds, but it's within the realm of possibility.
Edit: Very unlikely that Nylander and Marner play centre at the NHL level. Matthews and Backlund gives them a very nice 1-2 punch. |

Yeah, I just like Simmonds, didn't really look at their depth chart. |

I would love Simmonds...but his cap hit and ability make him very hard for Philly to trade
I just see it as very rare a team will trade out a center and then give us a good return for a center ...I get that backs is good but still look at it from the other teams view
is Dallas going to trade spezza and nuch if they are in win now mode ?

Flames really need one of the young prospects not named Tkachuck to step up and fill a top 6 roll or BT needs to find a way to snag a bonified top 6 RW.
I have hope for Mangiapane. |

I think at this point it's a "wait and see" approach with the Flames lineup. It will be whatever works. Or decisions made by management to make something work. |
