They're at 59M right now, 13M under the cap and that's including a 7,5M cap hit not really paid to Datsyuk....

I guess time will tell but I'd be scared of them having to trade a good player because the owners don't want to spend enough.

I would have been happy to get Chychrun at the draft - I was really hoping the Leafs would move up and get Sergachyov - They would have had to pay alot. That having been said, Arizona gave up pick 20 and 54 as well as the cap hit.

i think Smoak sits more.. rotate JB/upton in RF, and sometimes Saunders.. Upton is decent upgrade on D for both

I think the strategy is not to over pay for pitching and try to out score teams.
You give up some defense by having Upton in centre, but not much. But you add power and keep Bautista in right and Encarnacion as DH.

Agree - fantastic deal for the Jays. Also found out Upton's entire salary for next year is paid by Padres, Jays are only on the hook for about $5 million. Upton has killed the Jays in the past, a better fourth outfielder than Revere. Solid move.

He is replacing Carrera, if you haven't noticed Smoak is hitting very poorly and will likely play less down the stretch. Expect Saunders - the weakest defensive outfielder on the Jays to see some time as DH the rest of the way. He is also an excellent insurance policy if any outfielders get injured down the stretch.
