I get your point completely, we'll see how those two develop. Leafs made a trade up to get Tyler Biggs not that long ago - because he was thought to be a big power forward along the lines of a Gary Roberts - didn't work out so well, Chychrun might be a good d-man - we'll see.

with Bautista its pretty simple imo.. you keep him, try to win now..Maybe you can re-sign him maybe not... they get a 1st if he goes to another team. also like you mention, he has to accept the deal...its not a simple thing to trade him...esp for what the Jays would want

Upton is ok..not great..but can help overall.. and the Jays could lose both JB and Saunders next season.. it sounds like SDP will pay a lot of uptons salary so not a big risk move really..since they have him for next season as insurance against others leaving

Upton is a WAY better fielder and better on the bases than Jose.

But with the players they have in the system ( Strome, Dvorak, Merkley etc) plus the development of players like Domi they will be very good within the next few years.

I would love to see an analysis of how guys have done after their stock has dropped precipitously at the draft (I'm sure someone has written an article).

The most glaring one I can remember is Angelo Esposito - it was painful when the camera kept showing him sitting in the stands.

Turns out the scouts were right.

Esposito was something yeah... guys at RDS were yelling how idiotic the Habs were to not draft him with the 9th pick (we got Mcdonagh) and then couldn't understand not trading down with our 2nd first rounder (we drafted Pacioretty).

But other examples of guys dropping that I remember.

Forsberg to 11th
Grigorenko to something like 12th
Beaulieu to around 16th
Couturier to 8th (was 1st overall during the year).

Honestly, that fact alone would piss me off so much if I was a Yotes fan.

Kinda like how the Expos were doomed when you could tell they'd never keep any good young players they'd draft or acquire in a trade because once they need to get paid, they'll leave or get traded off.

That's a completely diffrent problem though since the Leafs can spend to the cap. Arizona doesn't seem to be in that position.

Superstars make more than 6mil.. They could also be Toews ad Kane in the making, who knows? Arizona will definitely spend to the cap if they are ready to contend.
