Detroit only traded down four spots (from 16 to 20) in the first round and also received pick #56 and a stiff (former 7th rounder Joe Vitale) - that's a pretty even trade IMO. Now toss in a 7.5 Million cap hit - you would think that alone is worth a late first rounder or a high 2nd rounder at the very minimum. I think Detroit won that trade easy. Almost everyone at the draft was shocked at the lack of return for Arizona and you couldn't wipe the smile off Holland's face if you punched him in the mouth.

the difference in Arizona's eyes was the player that fell into their lap was a legit top 10 pick. So much that many of the scouts had Chychrun ranked as the best D man of the draft (not that I think he was).

BUT, I bet you the kid is going to have fiery in the eyes and will work even harder to prove all those teams wrong that passed on him.

I get what he's saying, but the difference for ARI was they saw a player they wanted badly and with their cap situation, it made total sense.

worked out well for both teams, in the end Detroit lost an excellent D prospect because pavel screwed them over.

Arizona > Detroit at the end of the day here...esp. with that prospect pool they have, it's spectacular.

The $1.3M in cash savings to AZ – a team desperate for cash – was a big deal to them.

I understand that Chychrun was a highly touted pick that fell. Cholowski might or might not pan out - but Detroit does have an excellent draft record over the past decade at least. We'll have to see the difference down the road - its speculation until then. What do you think NYR or Columbus would pay to get out of cap jail? I believe it may be more than what Detroit paid.
