if hextall viewed him as the 3rd best forward on the team he would be locked up by now. G Jake Simmer and Coots are all more valuable and bring more to the team overall than Schenn does. Im not saying Schenn isnt a good player or an asset or not valuable to this team, but asking for 5.5 million per when he really has only shown he deserves that much for 3 and a half months of one season, pretty ridiculous. Hexy coming in at a smidge under 4.5 is right where i would value him as well. - sjk540 I personally don't view Jake as being more valuable than Schenn at least not at the amount of $$$ that's being paid to him.

A deal not being agreed upon is a direct indication of how Hextall feels, how is it not? He is the GM, he gives out the contracts in the end, he is the be all end all of contract negotiations. if hextall felt the same way schenn feels about himself a deal would be done, no? The fact that Hexy gave contract extensions with a year remaining on deals to G, Jake, Simmer, Coots and also re-signed core guys well before arbitration like raffl, MDZ, Schultz, etc, shows exactly how he feels about the player.
I understand what Bill outlined, i understand how arbitration works. this has nothing to do with that, it has to do with how we arrived here, and numerous other variables that have relation to why we are this situation. - sjk540
A negotiation is not one sided. There is a player and an agent onvolved. Hextall has stated that he wants to sign Schenn to a long term deal. Contracts are not given out, they're negotiated. Hextall has been negotiating with Schenn for a while ow including during the past season. If what you state was true, and Hextall was the be all and end all, the Flyers would have a lot more cap space. |

4 years is a good length.
$5m was what I was hoping for, but an extra $125,000 per year shouldn't break the bank. |

Yup that's what I see too. Was hoping Hexy would be able to keep him in the $4.5-4.75m range, but I can live with this deal. |

More than I like, but it's a modest overpay.
Also, if the last 4 months of last season are the start of a trend and not just a fluke, it's a good deal for the Flyers |

Does the arbitrator still get paid in full?
If so, it seems like a great gig. |

4 years at $20.5M. Roughly $5.125/year. |

Well at least we can move on to the next segment of this hockey season.
The "he can't live up to that cap hit" part.

Seems like the choice for Hexy was 2 years at ~$4.75m in arbitration, or 4 years at $5.125m.

the very point that they have been negotiating now for awhile goes to show you just how Hextall feels. Yes all negotiations are two sides, but its the flyers side giving the money. if schenn asked for 6 million and didnt back down, it would be hextall saying no and signing whatever deal the arbitor laid out. hextall is the one who ultimately says yes or no on giving out money. of course, schenn can turn down a deal, but in the end, if he does sign, the erm and money that are agreed upon come from hextall. again, schenn can counter, but hextall would then have to agree to that.
you dont think that the way he handled every other core players contract negotiations that he certainly feels different about schenn? im glad he is signed, i think its a slight overpay, i was looking for 4.75, but at the end of the day 400k wont make or break anything in the future. |

Then we have another pre-injury Joffrey Lupul. It's not exactly like paying the money to Dan Cleary or Dave Bolland. |
