Unfortunately many quality offensive players have defensive issues. While cap space concerns are always legit it's not like the Sens are facing any type of payroll issue right now with over $14M in cap space. Hoff should be entering his prime and is a valuable commodity.
- Queenie_5_hole

Unfortunately, this organization and fanbase hates those types of players. This is the main reason Hoffman negotiations are going so terribly. All players should have a "Rudy" like hustle all over the ice apparently. However, as we see year after year, winning teams have a mix of good two-way guys, offensive minded players, and defensive minded players. They don't all fit the same mould. Watch the organization and fanbase turn on Karlsson if he has one average or subpar season.

Just a show of hands...
Who on this blog would be done with the team if Dorion/Melnyk blow this and/or Ceci
Im curious

- JN1980

Hoffman will not reach arb hearing.. 4 years x $5.1

Ceci could go threw hearing but I highly doubt it. 2 years x $2.9

Are they going terribly? Just because they are taking their time, I see no mention of animosity. In fact both side seem to be speaking with confidence from everything I've read. Hoffman wants to sign in Ottawa. Dorion insists he will be signed. Granted, that could mean a 1 and done contract, but maybe they are just taking their time?

There isn't any animosity, Mike Hoffmans two agents have both said the talks are going well and they have both agreed that they want long term. Management has said the same thing.

We all seem to be pretty clear on the price. I wonder if they are still talking about things like a no trade or something and thats what the hold up is.

Maybe the team doesn't want to give him a no trade. Maybe they offered it and Mike is having a hard time making his list of teams.... who knows

I think your right. This is a huge contract for Hoffman. He has never had a substantial contract and he is 28 years old. So this is his once and only chance to make a really big buck. His next contract will likely be for less money. I think his agents would like something in the 6 year @ $5m range. My guess is the Senators are starting at 3 year @ $5m.

$4.625M over 4 years for Kreider. A 25 year old LW who has a single season goals high of 21, and single season point high of 46. Granted Kreider is a touch younger and quite a lot larger, but that seems to indicate that Hoffman will be getting a good amount more than $4.625 per year. I was hoping the Sens could convince Hoffman of $4.8M per year, but if that is a number to go off of, I think $5M+ is going to be the low point.

Evander Kane arrested. I know he's got skills, but I'm really not interested in having his crap impacting the dressing room.

EDIT:
Also, re: Kreider signing:

That's the range Hoffs camp wants on 4-5 years. Sens still stuck on 3.75-3.95 for 3.

I don't KNOW. Well actually I do know they would LIKE to keep it below $4M/year ( I don't know if they are actually proposing that, though ). All I'm saying is that won't be happening.

PS - This isn't the only 'insider' I've seen mention the Sens going into negotiations hoping for sub $4M per year. I'm HIGHLY suspicious of that though. That seems pretty far separated from what most people are putting out there for valuations.

all the so called insiders that state anything less than $4M are idiots.... it is simply illogical to think that.

Given all the comparables that have recently signed, there is no way any GM would be that stupid as to offer $3.75M. He'd be laughed all the way to arbitration, where the arbitrator would simply look at the comparables and spit out a number.

so, to all these so called experts/insiders .... you can cross f_ck-off

Kreider $18.5M across four seasons ($4.625M AAV)

Chris Kreider (LW) - past 2 seasons -
[21 goals, 46 points +24] [21 goals, 43 points +10]

Mike Hoffman (LW) - past 2 -
[27 goals, 48 points] [29 goals, 59 points]

Here's my take. Kreider is a speedy, really skilled, inconsistent forward. He could putting up more points. Now he gets 4 years @MacArthur $. He becomes UFA just after his 29 b-day, which puts him in a position to get a last great contract. Hoffman is a fast, highly skilled, goal scoring winger that lacks the overall game. Regardless, he has a few things on his side. First, he is 1 year away from UFA. He can take whatever he gets, score another 25 and look for at least 6m for 6 years (likely around a 40M contract). To a guy that's been through what he's gone through, he owes it to his agents, family!, and most of all himself to make use of this opportunity. With that said, there's no reason he should get closer to that kind of contract but the Sens still get to retain their best goal scoring since Michalek had working knees.

Hoff plays 2 months of this year as 26, but mainly the rest is as 27. So next year, YR 1 of a new deal, is essentially 28. I don't mind seeing him play as a 33 year old in the remaining 50+ games/playoffs but realistically Sens will want to get him for 5 years. Hoffman camp will look for somewhere closer to 40m than 30m (6x6). I'd say 5.5 x 6 years is fair.

Yea man, real sad. Guy is awesome.

I hope he has a good year - especially to allow him to channel that emotion. I'm sure the team and fans will be behind him..... along with his wife.

Glad tim Murray is not in Ottawa anymore

Hoffman (27) Brassard (29) Ryan (29.5)
MacArthur (31.5) Turris (27) Stone (24.5)
Smith (28.5) Pageau (24) Lazar (21.5)
Paul (21.5) Kelly (36) Neil (37)

Methot (31) Karlsson (26.5)
Phanuef (31.5) Ceci (23)
Borowieci (27) Wideman (26.5)

Anderson (35.5)

Pro: Sens have good spread of prospects now with Chabot, White, and Brown coming from great programs.

Cons: (concerns) certainly age suggests this group isn't as young think; especially when you look at the top 6 or where the $ is invested. Will be a pivotal year. Concern in nets as well.

Peter Holland would be a nice 4th line Center for this team. Big, can get points, left shot to balance it out, can play wing.

Seems like a no brainer to me

Honestly man, stay away. You'll have better in the AHL. What's with all the ex-Leafs? If I recall correctly, you guys wanted Grabbo and Kulemin as well

No thanks, Folwer is a good D but without Hoffman we have no one on LW and our scoring goes down huge

Kane turning himself in makes him a bad player? he had to because of the allegations against him.

if Kane could stay out of trouble he'd be a great player for any team.

i do think it's time to let mac go thought, same with smith we should sell on him while his stock is high

And I agree with tuna on Holland I think a good depth guy and can play up and down the lines without much risk barring major injuries imo this team will be playoff bound new coach will bring much added structure
