Watching star players like Giroux and Jake and Simmer and Mase and Ghost and Coots is THE WORST
- Mononoke

You know what I love about posting on here? How forming your own opinion isn't allowed. You're right, you named all the stars on this team, which I suppose match up to some of the leagues best. Forget about a time where Lindros was scoring 40 and setting up LeClair for 50. Forget the following rosters of....

Mike Richards, Jeff Carter, Danny Briere, Simon Gagne, Scott Hartnell, Claude Giroux, James van Reimsdyk, Kimmo Timonen and Chris Pronger.

Or...

Jeremy Roenick, John LeClair, Mark Recchi, Keith Primeau, Tony Amonte, Alex Zherdov, Sami Kapanen, Eric Desjardins, Simon Gagne.

I think I doubled this example of stars twice. If I can be direct though, not being a contender does suck and I'm a little embarrassed for you guys for having such a low expectation. We missed the playoffs with the same stars a year ago, Mason was chased out of the net this year in the playoffs, where we only looked like we belonged in games 4 and 5.

What's also interesting is how quickly most of you got defensive after asking a simple question over a roster that is currently in rebuild mode and expected to improve. It's amazing that with such pride, nobody could just answer the question and yet I'm the one with the problem.

Honestly, I don't know why I bother. Anyone who GM's the Flyers can do no wrong around here until he decides to move on under his own power, not to say Hextall is doing a bad job, he isn't. I'm just not in love with the new direction of the organization but I'm also not a drown.

that 09-10 team was a lot of fun

richie, carter, briere, gagne, pronger, timonen, hartsy, JVR, G, Carle with a competent partner, coburn with Kimmo, even dare i say ville leino, was a pleasure to watch. Lappy, etc.

only players i hated, ryan parent, lukas krajicek (>)

indifferent: andreas nodl, blair betts (great guy tho) leighton

I'm sorry, I really need to apologize and thank you at once. I overlooked your post while rolling my eyes. Yes, that 2010 was fun to watch from start to finish, struggles and all. Losing Emery, adding Leino and Leighton. Our depth at forward was unbelievable. Best 4th line in recent memory for me.

Sorry to go so off-topic so early, but as cool as it would be to see Temple of the Dog on their reunion tour, they are not a $400+ band.

went to Janes Addiction last night at the Fillmore

Perry's voice is nearly gone but it was still a great time. Woman in lingerie swinging from the ceilings from back piercings like piƱatas. Rock n Roll baby.

I don't think many of us even expected to sniff the playoffs at the beginning of the year. It was pretty cool to see Ghost and Co. make a push though. I'm not sure what you expected to happen in the first round vs WSH but in case you forgot they outclassed us defensively, offensively, and in net.

Are you unhappy with what Hextall has done? What would you have done differently?

I see more reasons to be optimistic that not

You asked a question and people answered. That's not being defensive. You seem like you're looking for a fight.

I don't know why you bother, either.

I'm more worried about "Man Dog" tbh. His contract is of vital importance.

The guy who basically makes fun of people when he reads what he doesn't like is accusing someone else of looking for a fight? I'm sorry, haven't you once took something I posted from one blog, bring it to another blog to compare a debate I thought was dead to Teddy Bears? This was supposed to accomplish, what? Because if I remember right, things escalated and I don't see how your actions are my fault.

I'll simplify. Has their ever been a past roster you were completely unhappy with? If you wanna play, great! If not, why bother responding if I'm supposedly looking for a fight?

I was basically asking if you guys were pleased with the roster and our new brand of hockey the past two seasons. I'm not pleased but if you guys are, that's fine, no sarcasm required, as if every single one of us should be happy with all the "star power" we have. In fact, one could question if G, Jake or Simmonds will be past their primes when/if we become contenders again.

I read an article on Yahoo Canada saying Benning wants to acquire pretty badly a top 6 scoring winger with grit. The article mentions the possibility (nothing more) of trading Tanev for one.

Tanev for Schenn. We could probably get Benning to add a 2nd too because. God I'd do that sooooo fast, even 1for1.

I wonder if I were to ask who everyone's least all time favorite Flyer is (rather than roster) because of course we all love everyone whoever played for us, right? I await the group gang up.

FWIW, I think we'd all love to have a stacked Flyers team that was a serious Stanley Cup contender.

The trouble is, with the salary cap and nature of the sport, it's more difficult to sustain that sort of team long term.

The teams that have sustained and been consistent contenders and winners year in and out since 2009 are generally teams that either bottomed out and had lottery picks or are teams that did an outstanding job of drafting and developing their systems over time.

When Ron Hextall was named GM, he preached a plan of patience. He could have come in and gone scorched earth and traded away guys like Giroux, Voracek and Simmonds and done a full on rebuild. Instead he saw a solid core and is trying to build around it, remaining competitive while retooling.

Whether this approach will bear fruit is unknown. But Hextall came in with a stated plan and has followed it, pretty much to the T. If people don't like that, fine. But nobody can say they weren't told what the deal was going to be.

Personally I embrace it, because I think it's the best way to get to contender status and remain there for an extended period. Hexy could do what Holmgren did, dealing away multiple first rounders for established veterans. But we've seen how sustainable that turned out to be.

In just two years Hextall has turned a fairly barren system into one that is consistently ranked in the top 10 in the NHL. Even Ed Snider recognized this before his death. Snider knew that he might not live to see another Stanley Cup, but he still signed off on Hextall's plan. If that means a season or three of "boring" hockey, I can live with it.

I'd be tempted with a second tossed in. Tanev has become a very solid defenseman over the past couple seasons. Plus he's a righty that you can just plug in for 20+ minutes a night.

Also at age 26 he's not at the point where his game would be expected to drop in the next few seasons.
