I agree, his moves usually have some shrewedness to it. I don't know how realistic this rumor is but Bennett is exactly the type of player Melnyk would want. Cheap replacement, and able to contribute. We don't have anything else that has the type of value/cost savings Bennett has.
The only angle I see BT even considering this is that he doesn't believe Bennett's ceiling is as high as it once was, and he looks a what Hoffman could bring to the Backlund-Frolik pair and deems that a respectable 2nd line going forward.

No fcking poop, I know it's Friday but FFS, Bennett for Hoffman!!!

Are people just bored or something? Jesus. Why are we even talking about Hoffman, we have no fcking money to sign him!!!!! We need to sign Monahan & Gaudreau & call it a fcking day. Next year we can get woody's over all these fantasy add ons.

His comparables would be guys like Rielly Smith and Gustav Niquist who signed for around 5 mill. I think Hoffman could probably get 5x5.25 or something close to that. So if they were to take say Frolik and 50% of Wideman's contract we shouldn't have any trouble fitting him under the cap.

I think the only reason Ottawa might consider making a move like this is that they need to prove to Karlsson that they are going to try and win (but they are still an incredibly cheap team ) and they are using Hoffman's cap hit to bolster the team in multiple areas.

I wouldn't want to give up Fro, he brings some much needed grit. And can add a few points here and there. Hoff is a little more one dimensional imo.

Fair point, not sure I would want to give him up either. He's just the only guy that I can think of BT dangling that would be of any interest to the Sens.

Adding Hoffman does give us a legit top 6 winger though. We add one more winger (or someone from the system pans out) and we'd have a pretty deadly top 6 in a year or two.

Didn't say it would hypothetically be a one for one. Nor did I support such a move. That would be the guy they would want though.

I guess we should keep kicking the same dead horse and talk about nothing but contract extensions. It was brought up because EK mentioned it in a blog.

Better send the word on to Gulutzan. Sounded like he's more open to trying him on the first line.

I'm sure they would want Bennett. But I'm certain they could find something more realistic if they were serious about moving Hoff.

OTT is a wild card because you never really know where their owners motivations are. Money is a big factor in OTT. You just saw them plan a year ahead by trading Zib thinking he'll cost too much next year. They may be happy with a player that has a bigger cap hit but smaller actual salary and a pick/prospect. Who knows with them.

Copied this from a leafs fan on Ek's blog:

Frolik’s remaining salary is 5/4/4/3.

Seems like a melynk special

Kind of gives some credence to my trade proposal

Which is kind of why I've been panicking about not bringing in at least 1 top 6 winger Brouwer might be a good fit with Johnny and Money (Kunitz like?). But man, the guy is a 3rd liner on just about any team in the league. I hope we don't have to resort to giving the guy 20 minutes per game

While I think Frolik for Hoffman would be something Treliving should find a way to get done, simply due to age and production, I'd really like to see another year of Frolik before letting that ship sail.
Frolik struggled on the score sheet last year, but there was nothing wrong with his play. He was a possession driver, his defensive game was great, and he was around the net all year long. For whatever reason, he seemed snakebit. I'd really like to see another year and give him a chance to show that he's worth that contract.
I like Hoffman, but don't think the upgrade from Frolik warrants what the Flames would have to add to make it happen. Additionally, regardless that Frolki shoots left, he is a right winger and a pretty good one at that. Just because Treliving wanted to address the complete lack of right shooting forwards, doesn't mean hes going to slot out every position as a mild to be followed.

Stamkos didn't really take less. The 8.5 he makes in tampa is the same as 12.5 in Toronto because is the tax differences. He got a full NMC so he doesn't have to worry about getting traded to a higher taxed area.
- flamminghead

Yes he did take less...people talk about the tax difference but it's not actually as big as some other factors
One in Toronto he'd be making USD and living on CAD...that alone cancels out any tax benefit....Second, he would apparently make millions more due to endorsements playing in Canada, specifically in Toronto.

Reporters and analysts have said he took less money to stay in Tampa and I think they know better than you... this is why they asked Monahan this specific question, pretty sure they are so oblivious to not know about tax implications, they've just factored that in as well like I stated above.

People need to stop looking at what you would give up and what it would cost ...backs n picks ..no.... Frolik a prospick and a 2nd ,..no ....if we get hof it will be like pulling a bandaid ...hurt at first but ok after

My realistic but not what I would do offers

Hoffman
2nd

For

Tkachuk
Wideman

Or
Janko
Top d prosp
3rd

For Hoffman

Even then the sens are more confused then the oilers in the second round

$8.5M in Tampa Bay is comparable to $11M in Toronto.
After tax take home in Tampa Bay @ $8.5 will be about $5,175,000.
$11M in Toronto would have been about $5,150,000..

It would certainly be a consideration, regardless of the exchange rate. A no move clause is definitely protection against a move to a high tax rate jurisdiction. If he were traded to Toronto with his existing contract, he'd lose about $2M per year. On an 8 year deal that's $16M; not exactly chump change.

Consider the Weber / Subban trade.
Due to the jurisdictional tax differences.
Suban will make $1.53M more this year in Nashville than he would have in Montreal. And and extra $7.97M over the term of his deal.
Adversely, Weber will make $1.67M less this year, and $7.4M less over the term of his deal. Fortunately for him, his contract was so front loaded that he's seen a lot of the money already from the last four years of his deal that pay him 3, 1, 1, and 1 million .

As for endorsements, I don't know that Stamkos would actually benefit as much as some think. He's already the third highest paid player in the league with his endorsements from Nike, Bauer, Coca-Cola, and Tissot. Only Sid the kid and Great 8 AO are ahead of him. Although being in Toronto would raise his profile a little, he's already got his name out, beyond the city limits of his home team and the best way for him to advance that more is to win a championship, or the Hartman. His chances of that are significantly higher in TB than in TO.

Calgary and Edmonton(40%) were almost on par with the tax rates of Nashville and Florida's teams (39.5%).so that was a nice bonus, just a couple years ago. The provincial NDP and federal Liberals have lessened that advantage with the targeted tax increases on the higher earners , now it's nearly 48%. It's still way nicer than the Quebec(53.25%) and Ontario teams(53.5%) have to deal with.

Todd should have another article on signing the big two or how weak our bottom 6 is possession-wise soon; it's been four days.

Just for the sake of reading different material in the offseason, I'll throw a list of ideas for blogs that aren't a hero chart and a brief analysis:

-A look at Bennett's scoring trends over the season/a closer look at how many goals Bennett was robbed of last season

-a look at the Stockton heat in the final chapter of last season (they gave opportunities to younger players and they produced)

-A closer look at Johnny's scoring trends in relation to playing teams that are known for slashing

-Top 5 fights of the year for the Flames

-Top 10 hits of the year for the Flames

-How will losing Colborne affect our overall place in the standings (shootout points lol)

-A statistical analysis of Wideman's play pre/post incident

-Can a successful trap goalie find success in a system with less emphasis on the trap?

I'll stop there but I'm sure there's plenty more.
