The drop pass is a set play, I highly doubt Edler sets the plays up for the team….you can blame that one on the coaches not the players.

Yup, we saw a lot of it out of Hutton this past year as well.

That's ok. We are trading Edler Hutton and the drop pass designer for Landeskog and Barrie.

Some analytics do in fact cover where the goals are coming from and what types of shots they are as well as where they come from.

I think when people actually look at the methodology of these analytics, they start to understand why they can be useful when used in context. Instead I think most bury their head in the sand when they start hearing these statements thrown around.

To your points though how does traditional stats deal with any the qualifiers you presented?

Is there a separate goal column for deflections, top corners, 5 hole, backdoor etc?

Why you see Analytics focusing on shots primarily, is because they are a high event action that for the most part isn't effected by bias. It is harder to ignore outliers when there is only 4 goals scored a game, when you have 30 shots per game the noise doesn't effect the sample to the same degree.

For example how many goals scored are snipes in comparison to deflections or "dirty goals" ?

While not every shot is as dangerous as a shot from Ovechkin, each does signify an opportunity for a goal and likely a result of positive offensive contributions and/or a negative contributions from the players on the ice.

Over a large enough sample size, you see generally the best players by the "eye test" also displaying a positive possession impact. The ones that are the most interesting ( read controversial) are when a player's analytic impact goes against the traditional eye test.

For example Jannik Hansen was a analytic darling while playing with the Sedin's prior to this year but the traditional stance was that he had stone hands and couldn't score. The argument there was that the sample size was too small and he hadn't had a big enough opportunity yet to show his abilities.

I would say the Hansen example is pretty straight forward, He went from playing 3rd line minutes and players, to 1st line players and minutes. Of course his stats are going to be inflated a bit. Hansen is still a 3rd liner to me with the ability to move up if needed.

Who's going to play on the Left side of our D if they trade both the top 4 Left sided D?

I agree, perhaps you don't recall the debate about whether he could in fact produce with them though?

I think it was Drance still at CA who posted some stats showing why he was the best option, which many here opposed because he had stone hands.

I don't remember a debate about it but I'm not opposed because of his hands, I just don't see him as a 1st liner. He just doesn't have the skills to be a first liner.

That's where you drew the line, not the Edler Hutton thing?

I was joking

Lol well I like the trade actually, just not both Left sided D. Moving a D out to get a top 6 forward that Van is looking for. After training camp to see if Juolevi or Stecher can contribute this year will see if Van can trade a D for a forward. Edler and Tanev for Barrie and Landeskog. Would give Van a PP, scoring D and a power forward.

Rumor is Marcuss Johansen wants 5.25m and club doesn't want to pay more than 3.85. He definitely isn't worth 5.25, but if a trade for cheap could happen and then sign around 4.5m(get them to take sbisa from us) Maybe he might be worth getting for that 2nd line.

Looking forward to seeing what Tree will do after a summer in the gym. I was surprised how out of shape he was when he came over. I always thought the Russians were hard core after seeing those documentaries about the Red Army training.

he looked like he was in shape until he got on the ice. needs more cardio work. he looked totally gassed a few times after longish shifts but that expression on his face like he knew he could do better and his conditioning was holding him back.

I like some of the pieces in our d corps. I just hope we can move Sbisa and if we acquire another dman, they are young enough not to need waivers.

I was a little disappointed to see Fedun leave. thought he was getting better.

I think Tryamkin and his development is the most intriguing Canuck right now. He came over into a tough scenario last season and exceeded my expectations. Hard not to get excited for him.

Why can't we offer sheet him? we have the required draft picks.
Actually I don't really want him, we are not in a position to do anything but play the players we have now.

Edit: Oh I see he's filed for arbitration.

Him getting used to the smaller ice surface will have a big impact as well.

He is going to arbitration so you can't. Also if Wash doesn't like what arb awards him, he goes to UFA and they get nothing for him. Perfect time to buy cheap the closer it gets to arbitration day.
