The thing is...
I think Karlsson is EXTREMELY overrated
The guy is a scoring machine, no doubt
But teams are successful in the playoffs with defensemen like Doughty, Keith & Seabrook, McDonaugh, Hedman, etc
Risto looks to be A LOT more like those guys than Karlsson does
If I was up by a goal with 2 min left,
I'd be sitting Karlsson in the bench

Did anyone watch Risto in the last 40 games? He was not only not great he was downright awful at times. Overall, the last half of the season he was below average. Not sure if he wore down or what, but the risto of the last 40+ games was not the risto of the first 40+

Risto needs a stay at home defenseman as a partner that can let him play his offensive game. He's not a wet blanket on defense but his offensive game is where he's special. He won't be Karlsonn, but he can get some points and play big minutes on defense as well.

If we end up keeping that pick next year I want to go defense all the way. We need that shut down defenseman.

U think a fringe NHLer is a better choice for 3rd line center duties
than a 1st round pick, who plays well defensively, is gritty, was on pace for a 20goal season as recent as 2 years ago,
and at ONLY 22 still has potential to get back to the 15+ goals range?

Ottawa was 28th in goals against in the league, with Karlsson playing all those minutes
We were 16th with Risto leading the way in icetime

Stats can be deceiving
I do think they're useful, but if u just watch the players, Risto is better in his own end than Karlsson

Girgens also had his lowest TOI/G this year

also got forced to the wing in favor of cor, but don't mention that the 14th overall pick was suppose to be part of the solution and is not

I just want this kid to play like he was drafted to play, being a decent complimentary player to the likes of ror, okposo, eichel, reinhart, kane, etc

Good chance we will be wrong again.

I have said it for years that the NHL needs to make a separate award for the best offensive defenseman. They have one for the best defensive forward. If this happened, guys like Karlsson would not even get consideration for the Norris.

Erik Karlsson is one of the best 3 D men in this league.

I agree that in certain situations, he isn't elite defensively, but so what? He scores more than anyone else.

If you wanna argue Karlsson vs. Doughty, or Karlsson vs. Keith, then sure.

As far as Girgs goes - everyone needs to relax. Is he a super high end talent? No. Should you blame him for wanting a bigger role? No.

He played a big role on a crap team and imo he stepped up for them in '14-'15 ... now they have new toys and he is cast aside like scrap. Considering the effort he gave, I could see why he would feel slighted. How many of you, at age 22, would be ok with younger guys coming in and taking your spot (no questions asked) after you went hard for 2 seasons? Maybe if he was older he'd have the maturity to say "yeah I need to be a role player on this roster" but I know at 22 I felt like I could take on the whole world, everyone else be damned.

I miss hockey. I want the season to start now.
