You forgot the Orphans. Originally as a member of the National Association, 1870-1876 and pre-NL, the team lost their lakefront ballpark during the Great Chicago Fire (no, it wasn't the cow) of 1871. The stockings were known for a short time as the Orphans and before the dawn of the NL in 1876. Briefly, in the late 19th century, the Orphan name returned. This time, it was after the great Cap Anson left late 1897.
If the ChiSox have any sort of a firesale, getting rid of Sale or Quintana would be an epic mistake. I still can't believe Sale went off the rails twice this season. Is he related to Zambrano? Now, Z is a nut case. - blackhawk24
But it was Mrs. O'Leary's place on DeKoven - which is now ironically...?
And on the same day, the Great Fire in Peshtigo, WI killed 1,500 - 300 were killed in Chicago. |

My feeling is the Sox need to trade Sale NOW, before his arm flies to the 1st base dugout. His pitching is a disaster waiting to happen. Every start he makes is 1 day closer to that day. They should build their future from trading Sale, and let another team deal with his arm flying through the air. |

Fire Academy. Not too far from UIC, where the West Side Grounds were located. Warm, dry fall that year, 1871. Here and in Peshtigo.
The somewhat famous and oft paraphrased "out of left field" saying was tied to the West Side Grounds. Took nearly a century for a sign to be erected there on Polk St commemorating the site.
Peshtigo fire was 10x bigger. My Father in Law's family are from Peshtigo & Menominee (WI and MI). Just there a few weeks ago for my wife's grandpa's memorial. Got all kinds of Peshtigo history lessons from his family. |

Fire Academy, just north of Manny's.
There's a Peshtigo Street (Court? Something.) running for only a block between Grand and Illinois in River East.

That's pretty cool. The law firm I worked for out of law school was the oldest in the city and had a set of books still in the library that had famously been saved from the flames of the Chicago Fire by a partner who loaded them up on his wagon and drove them out of the city until the fire was over. |

You guys wouldn't have won the cup without Tallon. All Bowman did was a few minor tweaks and suddenly you guys have a cup. |

Manny's......good sammich. Close enough walk from the old Science & Engineering South UIC bldg there on Roosevelt. IMHO, they can give Katz's a run for their money. |

Different pastrami: Katz' is hand sliced and thicker - Manny's is spicier. I love Manny's but I like Katz' more - 2nd Avenue Deli back there is as good as Katz.
But - they don't have anything like the Polish you get at Jim's (Polish from Jewtown), just across the expressway from Manny's.
Not many good Jewish delis left - a couple of new ones in South Loop are OK. |

'Strami spice is why I think I favor Manny's. 2nd Ave, eh? Missed it. Got sucked into the touristry Katz. Still a great choice. Love them pickles too. Had to go there last time I saw the 'Hawks play the Blue Shirts.
Being at UIC for four years, I totally got in on the Maxwell St Polish. Also a short walk from the South end of the East campus, long before there were dorms. |

I agree with dealing him...along with Quintana, Abreu, Lawrie, Frazier, Melky, Eaton, Robertson and Duke. Load up on young guys and do a total rebuild. If you could get 3-4 guys for Sale, and 2 guys for Q., Abreu and Frazier....you could at least be entertaining for a few years while slowly getting better. Build around Anderson, Collins (the recent draft pick), Fulmer and Rodon. But if you only deal away one or two of these guys, you are still "mired in Mediocracy". You have to go all in on the rebuild. Now of these guys will be around when we get good anyway.

Last time I checked the Stanley Cup is not handed out in October so having said that we can all agree that the Hawks at the present time on paper look to have questions when it comes to depth or who can play with Taser and Hossa. The central division as a whole has regressed some, the blue's losing a captain and size as well as trusting Allen to be the number one goalie. Dallas has goalie issues, Colorado is still searching for quality D-men. Nashville and Minnesota have improved, the former by resigning or extending young stars and the latter by hiring Bruce B. as head coach and addition by subtraction by getting rid of Vanek. Who is going to wear the 'C' for the preds?
The Hawks seem to evolve as the season progresses and addressing a need or needs at the deadline so let's not write the Hawks obituary just yet. Maybe the Hawks do not have to be at their best early because of divisions regression. Glass half full I guess. |
