They all (Toews, Kane, Seabs)would've received more money had they hit the open market. And dont forget they took less money on their previous contracts.
- Minestrone

I don't see that getting more then 84 mil and 55 mil on the open market, you need to remember they only can get 7 years so the would be 12 AAV and 8 Mil AAV. So your are saying somebody was going to give teows and Kane 13 mil AAV and seabs 8.5 mil AAV? And to a team that they would like to play for. How many teams in the NHL could pay that much for those type of players 5? TOR, CAR, AZ, IE not places people want to goto right now. I stand by my statement that they squeezed every penny that they would have gotten out of the hawks that they would have gotten on FA. in regard to under paid on there 1st contract after ELC. Seabs was a top 15 paid D man thru the whole contract nobody would call him any better then that. Teows and Kane got 6.3 and it only bought out 1 year of FA IE 4 of the 5 years they would have been RFA. The both singed the deals after 2 years in the league were Kane AVG 23 Goals and 70 Pts and Teows did 29 and 62 pts. those contracts are very consistent with what other young guys get that look to be future stars. I will agree in year 3-4 of the kane teows deals that were a good value. Tyler Seguin deal is for 5.75 and for 6 years. and it bought out 2 of FA.

Was there a Q-quote somewhere I missed on that because last I knew was that Q liked Hossa with Toews. Not that I'm against Hossa playing with Kruger but I thought the idea of Vesey at 1LW was to play the Saad role and be the missing piece so the Toews-Hossa line can get back to their possession dominance of a couple seasons ago.

It's all academic anyway until Vesey signs with the Hawks which my guess is won't happen.

I didn't watch the entire thing but my impression from the video is that Vesey doesn't backcheck. Time after time he dogs it getting back and is the last guy into the d-zone. He does have good speed but it's typical of a lot of offensive players where the speed going on offense far exceeds the speed going on defense, of maybe better put would be his determination going on offense far exceeds his determination going back on defense.
- EbonyRaptor

Vesey excels along the wall and doesn't need processing time to use the his mitts to advance play.
I think in the hawk system and most defensive systems in the NHL , getting all the way back is no longer a five man responsibilty until the opponent has set up shop/

Coaches at every level make sure their scorers has plenty of leeway in their defensive responsibilities especially when they are not playing championship games...ask Bobby Hull how much dee he played.
And (without sounding like I am holdin' his nuts) Vesey is faster than you think, b/c so many bigger players appear doggin' it with their strides.

So, imo, a non issue.

If he was to sign here, he plays right away were they need him, and doesn't falter.

And whether your views illustrated it, he's much like Saad in his execution and fluidity for a bigger framed guy, and he is almost 6 3.

Hawks def gave him a lowball offer, he chose to retire instead.

As far as Panarin getting poached by the Blues (because his friend Tarasenko is there), well if the kid wants to go, let him GO...by way of a trade ala Saad to Columbus, or Las vegas or elsewhere.

And do you REALLY think Tarasenko liked the way his minutes were handled in the playoff?

Will his pitch to Panarin be, "Come here and enjoy playing with less PP and regular ice time but you pockest will be lined with gold...

Players want ice time - really important to them.

Anything new on Hudler? Can Richards change his mind and come back after the all star game hypothetically? IE he does not really need to file retirement paperwork since he is not under contract. Maybe he does not want the grind of a full season but to come in for 2 months and the playoffs? Just a thought. Any truth to the rumor that Ship might have a out in Dec?

Good to hear. I saw the speed on the videos from the Foxboro league games - no problem with his speed and in the offensive end. maybe you're right about not needing to get all the way back but it just looked like he has a cherry picker mentality to him.

Artemi Panarin is a 60+ point player whether he's playing with Patrick Kane or on any other Top 6 line in the NHL. Go back and watch the tape from last season. His puck possession time and creativity were not far behind 88's. They are magic together and I think it is wrong to diminish his accomplishments as a rookie in the NHL's toughest division. You want to talk about a "rebuild" type situation? Get a package of picks for 72's offer sheet next summer. Then it's up Schmaltz and Debimcat to fill the voids at 1LW and 2LW. Good luck with that! Move Crow and/or Kruger before you let this comrade go.
- EnzoD

Totally AGREE !! Panarin is the youth and speed that this team needs to build around. Letting him go to keep ALL the older core would be a mistake long term. Of course we all love these guys but this year will show what this core is all about. Were they just tired from all the hockey these past few years, or are the signs of aging finally settling in ? Somebody from the core 6 or 7 MUST be dealt eventually to sign Panarin and make him the nucleus of the NEW core !! Unfortunately, IMO, a year of mediocrity from this team will severely diminish the worth of Crawford, who probably is the only chip that can be moved with a solid replacement in the wings in Darling. I guess we'll find out in the 1st month or so if the legs are back from this summer's long break for the core.

you can't afford him.

Even if the Sabres were to pick up half of the last two years of his $5,250,000 , 2.625 General Fanager has the hawks with $2,440,706 space.

And think about what you are asking the Sabres to do:

Basically admit the crapped a trade so bad, that they now will pay to get him off the books, PLUS Tyler Myers, forward Drew Stafford, three prospects (NHL rookie Joel Armia, Brendan Lemieux and Jack Roslovic)?

I dunno - they want to build there and one of the "young vet" keystones again is crumbling their rebuild foundation.

Even it you sent TvR to make it a fit, IF the Sabres' organization thought TvR saved face....does this free spirit Kane kid warrant more hand holding over TvR who plays now and is not one shred a problem?

And if Buffalo was that to make this lop-sided traded to rid themselves of Kane, are the hawks set on the back end with Campbell and Kepny additions before we even see Kempny on the small ice?

Yeah Kane comes here scores 30 goals with Toews and then in a year wants 6.5 or more...lol!

I did not say I'd rather have Tarasenko. I think Tarasenko has every offensive skill Panarin has except he's 30 pounds heavier and 4-5 inches taller. He's an ultra skilled beast. For that reason I think Tarasenko has a higher ceiling but TODAY I think Panarin is the better overall player.

IMO Tarasenko showed a lot of immaturity in last year's playoffs but he's nowhere near his prime physically or mentally, same for Panarin as well.

If you asked me who I'd take today I'd have to think on that awhile. Fortunately I won't ever have to make that decision.

No need to think about that in my eyes......... PANARIN

Any chance the Hawks take a flyer on Peter Holland. Know he has had injury issues in the past. Panik was a nice find from the Leafs. Anyone know more about him?

I never fault people for wanting to get paid for their jobs and services. Nothing wrong with that. For the limited time as an athlete, they should maximize.
- 93Joe

Oddly, I don't agree. I agree with their careers being shorter....but many of them make in one year what the common worker makes in a lifetime. Where the common worker has to almost always take the highest pay just to make ends meet....the multi-million dollar per year athlete can ask himself..."I can make 6.0 million per year playing for the Blue Jackets....or make 5.0 million per year playing for a championship caliber team who I have won twice with and probably will continue to win with over the next 4-5 years". I'm not trying to pick on Saad....but at some point, in those circumstances, where you are going to be financially comfortable for life....why not try to be as happy as you can possibly be outside the money?
