It seems like Gilbert was miffed that Maroon spent the summer playing in an IIHF inline tourney. Gilbert has a bit of a reputation for being a hard ass and having difficulty with player who don't buy in all the way. He's had success in minor pro and CHL hockey, though. - Jsaquella
From what I recall, that was kind of the start of things going downhill, he was out of shape, and rumors were he got into a physical thing with a coach, then sent home and traded
if it comes to that. I thought of it like a tactic to avoid arbitration - YuenglingJagr
He's not likely to get claimed, though.
Basically, Minnesota is waiving him, he goes unclaimed and it's a good argument that he doesn't deserve a one way contract, since 29 other NHL teams wouldn't take him for free.
The flip side is, if he was claimed, he still faces arbitration and the team claiming him basically makes his case for a one way deal. I'd be stunned if he got claimed, even without the pending arbitration

well yeah...thats why I understood it as a way to get him to come down on price. You dont have much leverage to say you are worth much if no one will claim you. from the team standpoint...it is a less personal way of letting a guy know hes worthless than standing in front of an arbitrator and pointing out why hes worthless

I figured out he was worthless when I looked at his stats...in basically every league he's played in.
Any unsigned guys still out there that might interest you guys on the cheap?
Would Vrbata fit on a 1 year deal?
I know Pirri's name has been mentioned.
I am probably in the minority but I wouldn't be against Mike Richards. Could fill a 3rd line center roll with wings like Raffl and Weise who have more speed. Also can kill penalties and was a solid PP player so he could help on the 2nd unit. - J35Bacher
Which ever way you wanna look at it or even dissect the debate, I don't feel Mike Richards is any worse than anything we have in the bottom 6 outside of Michael Raffl. I understand Richards has lost a few steps but I still view him as a competitive player. He might not be an offensive threat but he'll easily help with experience down the middle and PK, which are eras we need to improve. He's still one of our own.

Oh yeah, but from what I read, the biggest issue is the two way vs one way deal issue. Given his play the salary should be a pretty simple hearing.

When is Hexy gonna land the plane? - PhillySportsGuy
If Yzerman doesn't trade Kucherov for Schenn+2nd, Hexy is going to offer sheet him. If they match that offer sheet, Hexy is just going to offer sheet Palat or Drouin next year. Your world will be a nightmare, Stevie.

This is so frustrating just watching Kucherov sit out there. Yzerman will get some sweetheart deal and everyone will wonder how he did it. It's because GMs are (frank)ing cowards.
