I think the whole bernier thing was a rare bad deal from this new leaf management.
People endlessly lean on bernier and his full 4.15 salary being purged as a win, but that would imply that the team is at a point where paying to clear short term salary is a good thing. It's not. Bernier had zero term, his cap hit was irrelevant this season.
It makes zero sense to not have held him until the deadline. Worst case scenario would have been still trading him for essentially nothing, and with most of his money paid, would have been unlikely as well. He would have had ample time to even up his value the slightest.
Oh well, not the end of the world. |

Besides him being part of the "old" regime....I think some of it might have to do with having a CLEAR #1G in Andersen and not the continual Reimer/Bernier fight for #1 type situation.
Players need confidence in their G.
With a true back up and Andersen in #1 it makes things more solid...mentally for the players, the whole thing....kinda like paying Babcock a ton of money so the players know who's in charge.

Well we have Sparks, so no need for an over priced back up.. Its a new day in Leaf Land. |

Because why not? Does it make or break the season? Is it of consequence enough to validate essentially paying someone to fix it for us? Dumping someone for nothing who could be worth more in 8 months?
The ducks are threatening for a cup, and will be pushing 8 million in goaltending. If it doesn't matter to them, why the hell should it matter to us. |

This is actually a fairly logical argument. I don't think it necessitates dumping bernier so early for nothing, when getting some value out of it would have been such a minimal investment. But I can respect your argument nonetheless.
Definitely comes the closest to making sense.

Lets hope Uncle Lou can come up with a Vet presence to play back up. I wonder if Marty would come sit on the bench. Probably not. |

I agree with dumping him too early too. But...since it does kinda make sense then maybe WE don't know the behind the scenes stuff.
The management team knows more about Bernier than us...the whole team.
I have to think if they dumped Bernier for nothing that they have a much better understanding of his worth more than we do.
Maybe they know that they have to play him 20/30 games and he sucks so his value be nothing and the team could miss those points come playoff qualifying time???
Worse case, we missed out on a 2nd round pick...maybe.
My best guess...they need that cap space for something more important than a 2nd round pick. |

I think most of all they just wante to move forward with Andersen. Wether or not that's a good move remains to be seen, but moving Bernier out was a big part of it because I dont think it's healthy to have your new starter being challenged by the old one. They kind of did that with Bernier/Reimer and it was a disaster. It's a clean start for both sides so in that sense I think it's a good move. The faster they move on from players that they don't see fitting into the plan, the better. |
