I think the whole bernier thing was a rare bad deal from this new leaf management.
People endlessly lean on bernier and his full 4.15 salary being purged as a win, but that would imply that the team is at a point where paying to clear short term salary is a good thing. It's not. Bernier had zero term, his cap hit was irrelevant this season.
It makes zero sense to not have held him until the deadline. Worst case scenario would have been still trading him for essentially nothing, and with most of his money paid, would have been unlikely as well. He would have had ample time to even up his value the slightest.

Might have more to do with them wanting a goalie that can stop the first shot in a game! |

It was a handshake deal made during the Andersen trade. As soon as the bonus was paid they made it official. Bernier is due for a good season and I don't think Lou and Shanny want to win too many games this year. Another year like last year would be perfect. |

Entire cap hit was shipped - was part of the Andersen deal, teams were waiting for the cash bonus to be paid by Leafs. Toronto gets a 2nd round pick if Lou can show up with all four of his grandparents. - winsix
that's cool... do they have to be alive?
if not... then I'll happily dig those folks if it means grabbing another 2nd rounder. |

I'd disagree. We don't know what deals will come in the future. May be as simple as a bad contract coming back for a pick or space for something bigger. In this case we all agree bernier was not a part of the plan. Now we have more space if said opportunity arises |

if they wanted to tank they would have kept Bernier saying "we can rebuild him" or similar ... and planned to go into the season with Bernier and Sparks.... who was clearly shell-shocked by the end of last season
and they couldn't have made a serious pitch for Stamkos with Bernier as the #1 ... so fill in the blanks.
two questions:
1) what makes you think Bernier is "due for a good season"... he didn't have anything more than a good 20 game period a couple of times during his tenure in Toronto
2) what about the Andersen signing says "tank"? |

In my humble opinion, Bernier has the physical tools to be a number 1 goalie.
But not the mental toughness |

whats with the flyers clown?
cap space isnt vital to a rebuilding club?
what about the deals the bernier move allows us to make in regards to taking back salary for better players/picks (IE Laich deal) - GardinerExpress
or IE bernier deal...obviously they can retain salary later on...its not the end of the world...just didnt get why that guy said that ALL THAT MATTERS is that he is gone with no salary retained...for the leafs Id be happier with gone with salary retained for a draft pick. you're contradicting yourself in the same statement |
