And therein lies the inherent problem - lots of people will dismiss the data that they see if it doesn't meet their preset opinion or hypothesis. What it should do is prompt people to either look deeper into other ways in which the player they believe is better excels relative to the other, or consider changing their opinion if all data opposes their current viewpoint.

Could be cap/cash considerations too. Brassard is 5 mil cap hit for the next 3 years on a contract that was pretty front loaded. Zib is rfa after next season and due for a big raise.

New york also ate this year's bonus on Brassard.

In what way? It's data, pure and simple. It takes data points for a player and uses it to rank them relative to all other players in the same metric with a normalization for time. Now obviously each point is limited to just the particular thing that it measures, but it seems that folks forget that the data itself is completely inanimate - If you want to blame individual people for misusing them or being over-zealous with them that's one thing but that's on them.

One of my favourite things about some of the advanced stats guys is that the whole basis of their perfect calculations is subject to considerable error and subjective interpretation.

Yet, somehow, they manage to express their numbers to tenths of a percent accuracy.

If you use all the metrics then you get problems with covariance. Ultimately, you just want to identify that correct independent variables that actually explain the results.

The methodology for the bolded shouldn't be arbitrary but mathematical in nature.

People like Tanner, Yost, Mirtle have yet to realize that you can't "prove" something is correct by simply saying it is, and discounting any dissenting evidence.
