In what way? It's data, pure an simple. It takes data points for a player and uses it to rank them relative to all other players in the same metric with a normalization for time. Now obviously each point is limited to just the particular thing that it measures, but it seems that folks forget that the data itself is completely inanimate - If you want to blame individual people for misusing them or being over-zealous with them that's one thing but that's on them.

If you use all the metrics then you get problems with covariance. Ultimately, you just want to identify that correct independent variables that actually explain the results.

The methodology for the bolded shouldn't be arbitrary but mathematical in nature.

Measuring and understanding Defensive impacts is still a big blind spot.

People like things they can see, a blocked shot or a guy pushing a player off the puck in front of the net.

whats better a D who blocks a shot or one who stops the opposing team from gaining the Zone with the puck?

Its hard to see a play that doesnt happen. but those things show up eventually with enough Data over time ..if you look

But the sens gave up a younger guy and higher pick for a player who scored less last year.
