oh totally. i'm not saying call him into practice and bagskate em when his wife is due, just saying that accepting a trade and moving to another city after the kid is born is not some crazy expectation.

No not at all. Hamhuis on the other hand. His kids are in school and already have to deal with him away. Thats life, I deal with it every month.

I am usually the one to say exactly this but imo veterans deserve a little more respect when it comes to that kind of thing.

Example; FA gave up his flight to get Burrows home for the birth of his daughter. That to me is respectful. The birth of one child is very important. The career of a hockey player is very short but some things supersede that.

remember when burke was GM and at the TDL he aquired a guy (from the ducks I think)....he made a big deal cuz the guy wasnt immediately in town and later it came out he was having a baby at the moment. Burke called it failure to report and made a big production of it... what a clown

That's my point.
He's a hockey player and is out of town a lot...it comes with the territory. So are lots of people.
He is compensated handsomely to the tune of $5 million/year (a bit more than the avg family)
He can afford any kind of support for his Mrs. and/or fly back to Vancouver for the last few months of his contract if she didn't want to move...

I just find the argument that he didn't want to be traded (and admitted to effectively blocking a trade) because his wife was going to give birth a bit...i dunno...frustrating?
I know it's his right and i get that being around your wife/birth is important, but at the same time, this is part of the business and has to be anticipated.

I don't have a lot of sympathy for the rich.

His wife was having a kid. I am sure if he didn't have things on the go he would have.
- thundachunk

At 5m he coulda sucked it up some.
Bailing out then a poor season is hardly professional.

do you have children?
You never want to miss the birth of your children. Nothing ever replaces that.

Having just gone through it I agree completely. That said, Vrbata didn't just disappear for the birth of his child, he disappeared for the entire season, and the playoffs the year before. That's a crazy long labour. After his performance last season and his comments afterwards, taken out of context or not, there's no chance the Canucks bring him back. Even if Vrbata paid them.

I firmly believe in the in between. You have to rebuild and still compete.

Eriksson could be the guy Lefty is talking about to make Sutter better. I am positive we will see WD move players around.

- thundachunk

Eriksson signed here to play with the Sedins and his consistency should show (unlike Vrbata) that he doesn't get dropped to the second line to play with Sutter or Horvat. WD will move players around as all coaches do…but you won't see Eriksson with Sutter unless injuries massively hit. Don't be shocked if Eriksson is on the Sedin line for the full season which is where he should be. No Hansen, Burrows, Sutter or whathaveyou on the Sedin line…Eriksson.

I dunno.
The Sedin's seem to sort of get stale with their line mates (or opposing teams figure our how to play them) and require a change from time to time.
I think it's fine to mix it up and add a puck retriever (Burrows) a speedy honey badger (Hansen), a PF (JV).
It keeps the defense on their toes and allows the scoring to be spread throughout the lineup.
nothing wrong with that imo.

I think you're wrong about Erikkson. I think he will mainly be with the Sedins but it's been said that Erikkson makes others better and I wouldn't be surprised to see him join Sutter for a shift here and there. Especially considering the youth in our line up will get rewarded by playing with the Sedins here and there. Erikkson can play anywhere and I think if we struggle to find a consistency from Baertschi then he might slide down to LW with Sutter and Hansen.

A lot depends on Burrows too. If he can find any type of offense he could find himself on the second line too. It's really an interesting lineup because of the amount of potential versatility up and down. I just hope this where WD goes with it at least and mixes it up game by game.

I also don't think Erikkson is like Vrbata in the sense that he will stop being productive without playing with the Sedins. He has played under WD before too with Dallas and I really don't think he based his entire decision on the Sedins as linemates.

I think it's guys like Rodin, JV and Sutter you might see play with the Sedins. I know it's early to say but Rodin could get rewarded if he plays well. I say Sutter because I could see them giving Horvat some time with Erikkson too. I think it'll be an interesting year to see how things shake out but I think it's silly to say Erikkson will ONLY play with the Sedins when he can slot in anywhere and makes people around him better.

Yeah, those 3 are good possibilities for playing with the Sedins too.
Hell, given history, Etem will likely get a shot at some stage as well.

The point is it's rarely worked long-term to stick with 1 guy, 5 on 5.
If someone else can play effectively with teh Sedins, it allows us to spread the scoring around, which then takes some of the pressure of the Sedins and yadda yadda ya.
