My only concern about the Matthews contract, is Lou's idea that rookies deserve no bonuses. He could alienate Matthews to the point, that he goes back to the Swiss league. Down the road, he may decide to go unrestricted, thinking that Lou shortchanged him. I don't think it's in his DNA, but you never know the idea's that parents or an overzealous agent may put in his head.

Matthews deserves max deal with bonuses. Don't cheap out on your (hopefully) future franchise center while negotiating his first deal with the team.

Playing hardball with players works better when they are easily replaceable. Playing hardball with players you expect to be elite ends up with Subban-like contracts, rather than Crosby/Stamkos-like contracts.

DISCLAIMER - not suggesting Matthews will be the next Crosby/Stamkos, simply showing examples of players that are happy on their current teams and therefore take a fair deal, rather than demanding the best they can get because they've been (frank)ed around with bridge deals and other crap when they clearly deserved better.
