I don't like bullpoop or pretense. If he would have come on and been like "oh hey guys, cool story, my kid is up for being drafted this year! And what's more, I overheard something at my restaurant, check it out..." that would be great... but to claim to be a scout for the Wings and all the rest... it's bullpoop. Especially when his first post back that particular day was "Hey guys, don't worry the one and only KingGilmour has returned to grace you all with his presence..."

There is no point in talking about which rookies should play on line 1 or 2 or 3. Next year the Leafs won't have a line 1 or a line 2 or a line 3.
Instead they will have three lines with different roles that might end up with similar ice-time among the forwards depending on their PP time.
Line 'Face the Top Opposition' Hyman Kadri Komarov
Line 'Veteran scoring' JVR Bozak Marner/Brown
Line 'Youth' Martin(maybe Leivo?) Matthews Nylander
Line 'VetPlugs' whoever among Lupul, Laich, Michalek, Greening, Froese, Holland.
Please note that every single player in the VetPlugs line are totally expendable. They can be sent to the minors if we need room for another forward like a soshnikov. Or... As you can see, I put Brown and Marner in the same spot. That is where they both belong. |

What ever you need to tell yourself.
I should qualify I'm not even a Winnipeg fan but a Bruins fan. A fantsay hockey pool fan above all.
Winnipeg isn't giving up Trouba for JVR +. Did you not see what Edm just gave up to get Larsson. JVR is no Hall, no slight to JVR & Trouba's a better D asset than Larsson. Do you think Chiarelli didn't shake that tree & every other possible scenario before moving Hall. I can assure he he exhausted all options & took the best option available.
Scheifele is right on the cusp of stardom. You could argue his 29 goals & 61 points were good enough last season to qualify. Little going down to injury was Scheifele's 1st opportunity to be a 1st line C in the NHL. He has never averaged more than 18:35 in TOI/GP his last 2 full seasons. Nor has he made the top 5 in PP TOI/GP yet in Winnipeg. Nor has played 4 seasons in the NHL, he broke in as a rookie in 2013-14 getting into 63 games. He has 227 games of NHL regular season experience, or slightly more than 2 & a 1/2 years. At 6'3' & now 210 lbs & still filling out he's still almost 2 years or 173 games away from showing the player he will be in the NHL. These monsters develop along the lines of Dman as opposed to smaller forwards. Simply physics.
Winnipeg has handled his development & contracts perfectly. He's just ready to blossom in front of our eyes & Winnipeg locked him up for 8 years at 6.125 taking him to 31 years of age. This contract even next season is going to seem like incredible value & when he becomes 1 of the best 2 way centers in the NHL you will be saying. "Oh perhaps I should have done a little research before a stuck my foot up my you know where."
There is a reason Scheifele was drafted 7th overall in 2011. - striker777
JVR was drafted #2 overall.....who cares. The jets just made a HUGE dollar commitment to a guy who had his best season, with 29 goals. A lot of teams have taken the same risk....and a few have panned out but a lot haven't. The conversation was JVR and change for Trouba.....I don't care what the Oilers got for Hall, because they were desperate and oh yeah their GM also traded Tyler Seguin for a lot less than he was worth....and just did the same thing with Hall. JVR makes almost 2 million less than scheifele and is only 27 years of age.....not to mention, he really hasn't had a ton of support and has never played for a real coach until babs came here, and even then he didn't play a full season. I know for a fact Leafs turned down Fowler for JVR which would lead me to believe they can get better.....you let me know how the Jets pay Trouba for over 6 million when they only have 1.5-2 forwards lines....and a lot of cash invested in the back end....but then again you are a Bruins fan....maybe point out what you guys have left from the Seguin and Kessel deals.....

That's the problem I'm having. I think for SURE Brown is there. And I think Marner is too good to send down but we'll see in Sept/Oct. Then I don't know...maybe Brown(the more experienced) plays on the line 1 with Kadri and Komarov. Hyman bumps down to 3rd line or 4th line.
It's tough cuz with Nylander coming in at RW now we have 3 high potential RW rookies in Marner, Brown, Nylander.
Maybe somebody plays off-wing to play on the left side with that youth line of Matthews and Nylander. |

Marner may play his way on to the second line this season if he makes the team out of camp but Nylander is going to start ahead of Marner. Babcocks not throwing him on the second line at a buck 65 with no NHL expierience. |

I didn't start it just commented on someone else's post. I would have preferred to stay on task but someone went off on a rant so off base, throwing out a bunch of false info & representing them as facts, he wasn't even close.
I'd much prefer to debate & discuss Toronto's line up like the subject heading for this blog asked.
Toronto is a great young up & coming hockey team that in the blink of an eye has completely reversed Toronto's fortunes & positioned them to be a power house in the NHL in very short order. They are in transition with numerous veterans holding down the fort & providing leadership until Babcock can get the kids integrated & playing his brand of hockey. Neither he nor Lou are just turning the keys over to the kids much to the chagrin of numerous people posting here.
Ice time will be earned, veterans will teach the youth a small # introduced each year.
Nylander may very well play with Matthews in camp awsome. Nice to have a look at part of the future in camp but Nylander will eventually be a C in the NHL. Come opening day he won't line up with Matthews. Even exhibition is meaningless. When the games start to matter what is supposed to be will be. Nylander will play with Kadri Toronto's best defensive C & Matthews will be sheltered at least until both show they are fully ready to lead as opposed to follow & can fully play the system.
As soon as they are trades will happen top start moving out the odd veteran to be replaced by the other prospects ready to move up from the Marlies. 2 out of the gate, perhaps 1 in or around Xmas no later than the All-Star break. Injuries will allow for some small opportunities until then.
My question which no 1 answered was. Does Marner get more than a 9 game cup of coffee? Do you see Toronto riding 3 rookies essentially right out of the gate past Marners 9 games? Is this a good business decision to potentially burn off a year of his eligibility in a whole range of ways, contractually;ELC, waiver, arbitration & when he achieves UFA status. Factor in They are still at least 1 if not 2 years from being a legitimate playoff team.
If this is a long term plan then wouldn't it make more sense to send Marner back to JR. Protect his rights; all those mentioned above, until next season, solidify the D & bring him in with next years batch? - striker777
