The chances of Babcock pairing 2 rookies together in Matthews & Nylander is highly unlikely. That would be a disaster defensively. That sounds like the EDM's model to me. He will want to shelter both.

Komorov played with Bozak & JVR until injuries forced the change.

Michalek isn't a checker nor are you factoring in the fact players need to be waived & or demoted if waiver eligible & if not claimed, the salary implications of such.

- striker777

You're right. I'm hoping we lose a few bodies.

The only thing that is not correct...Babcock, himself, said he wants to put Nylander on Matthews wing. Maybe because they are both a little tiny bit more than regular rookies....don't know but it's what he said.

I didn't start it just commented on someone else's post. I would have preferred to stay on task but someone went off on a rant so off base, throwing out a bunch of false info & representing them as facts, he wasn't even close.

I'd much prefer to debate & discuss Toronto's line up like the subject heading for this blog asked.

Toronto is a great young up & coming hockey team that in the blink of an eye has completely reversed Toronto's fortunes & positioned them to be a power house in the NHL in very short order. They are in transition with numerous veterans holding down the fort & providing leadership until Babcock can get the kids integrated & playing his brand of hockey. Neither he nor Lou are just turning the keys over to the kids much to the chagrin of numerous people posting here.

Ice time will be earned, veterans will teach the youth a small # introduced each year.

Nylander may very well play with Matthews in camp awsome. Nice to have a look at part of the future in camp but Nylander will eventually be a C in the NHL. Come opening day he won't line up with Matthews. Even exhibition is meaningless. When the games start to matter what is supposed to be will be. Nylander will play with Kadri Toronto's best defensive C & Matthews will be sheltered at least until both show they are fully ready to lead as opposed to follow & can fully play the system.

As soon as they are trades will happen top start moving out the odd veteran to be replaced by the other prospects ready to move up from the Marlies. 2 out of the gate, perhaps 1 in or around Xmas no later than the All-Star break. Injuries will allow for some small opportunities until then.

My question which no 1 answered was. Does Marner get more than a 9 game cup of coffee? Do you see Toronto riding 3 rookies essentially right out of the gate past Marners 9 games? Is this a good business decision to potentially burn off a year of his eligibility in a whole range of ways, contractually;ELC, waiver, arbitration & when he achieves UFA status. Factor in They are still at least 1 if not 2 years from being a legitimate playoff team.

If this is a long term plan then wouldn't it make more sense to send Marner back to JR. Protect his rights; all those mentioned above, until next season, solidify the D & bring him in with next years batch?

Marner was by far the best player in the rookie camp, I think he sticks and I think he will win the calder.
Maybe Mathews wasn't trying as hard cause he comes from a mens league, but they both look like gems.

I can't see Babcock stomaching that many rookies on opening night, let alone 10 games in. Still, Marner is special and if he's ready, we'll move or waive bodies if we have to. We have the cap space to do it.

I think we'll see, at the very most rookie-wise, is:

Vet Vet Rookie
Vet Vet Rookie
Vet Rookie Rookie
Vet Vet Rookie

Possible the 4th line is all vets and a guy like Hyman or Rychel starts with the Marlies.

I'll move along. I don't wish to discuss cereal but discuss the subject matter. It shocks me the level of maturity here at Hockeybuzz. What are you guys 12?

Ek. I'll continue to check in & read the bloggers; of whom you have several like Mike Augello, I like but these threads are a waste of time.

Type more than 2 words & their eyes glaze over. In live conversation it would take about 20 seconds to type most of what I wrote. Like dealing with me 3 teenage sons. Sure, right, ok.

It's not about being a smart ass. How about providing some meaningful insight. What does cereal have to do with it? Just say to long I don't have that type of attention span my meds have worn off.

Thank you graveface & the eye.

I agree. My buddies dad had a great saying. "There is always room at the top." He meant it about everything in life not just sports. Teams will find a solution.

See Larkin in Detroit. The 1st 19 year old to make the team in 25 years. He stole his job.
