Some vets that were actually good..

No one looks up to Polak, he should be out of the league in a couple years.

- Tanooki

Hmm weird that Lou/Babs/Shanny collectively signed him b/c of his positive presence, on the ice, in the gym

i swear to god if i hear the "teach the kids argument" one more time!!!

Yup, lets keep a bunch of slow, washed up bums around to teach our highly skilled rookies how to play a game they are already far better than the vets will ever be..

Its not Jerome Iginla or Jagr were talking about, its Polak and Michalek

- Tanooki

what you'll delete your account and not post again?
You need someone to keep the young kids in line other wise they'll be on their ps4 till the wee hours and not get any rest.

Oh really? Sorry I didnt know you knew how they all acted off the ice. I mean they never stepped foot into NHL ice before but I'll take your word it

Oh my god...

They aren't teaching them how to play..they are teaching them how to act as professionals, how to take certain situations, how to handle the media(very important in Toronto, how to train, and when to make safe plays and when not to

Acting the part is just as important

- Santo_44

They've got a nice mix of vets without a Michalek, who'll probably spend a significant amount of time on IR. Laich, Polak, Martin, etc. all know their roles.

I'd honestly rather Lupul play over him, who's still a pretty decent NHL player when he's healthy and can maybe inflate his stats playing with Matthews or Marner on a line or PP.

yeah, again, i doubt that...

Im not saying they wont make rookie mistakes, im saying theres nothing Polak will be able to do about it. I think the vet mentor thing only works if the vet had a great career and the rookies look up to him.

My guess is that Nylander and Matthews would train the tits off Michalek..

Take a "talk to the media" course if thats such a concern. Dont go sign Polak. You guys are wayyyy underestimating the rookies of today. They grew up already in the spotlight. They got to where they are by working hard.

- Tanooki

And now they need to work even harder to stay.

I really don't want Michalek on this team. Any chance he retires?

Also does anyone know if the Leafs send Marner to the O, can they call him up midway trough the season? If it were up to me I'd send him to the O, let him play for Canada in the tourneys during the holidays then call him up after that. Injuries and tride deadline will have sppts open.

They can only call him up on an emergency basis..

And i really think it only makes sense to let him play the beginning of the season as a Leaf. If he slows down or makes mistakes then send hi off the the WJC.. then maybe to the Marlies for a conditioning stint, than back up with Toronto later in the season.

Shanny on Polak:
" at the end of the day, we felt these two players were a good fit for us right now. We have cap space. We know what Roman Polak is. A couple of years ago he was coming to us as a number five or six. Now he’s coming to us as a bit more of a depth guy to support some of our young players, and he understood the role he’s coming into. I have no problem with the character and the type of people we’ve brought in. At the end of the day, when you sign a couple of good guys like that, it doesn’t change our philosophy."

I think there is a stark difference between veteran "stars" and veteran "players." Even though you need both to be successful.

If Jaromir (frank)ing Jagr tells you to change something, it's 50000000x more powerful than if Matt Hunwick does.

This is where Freud would suggest using the word Stark and a hockey iron man like Jagr isn't coincidence.

Polak just came back from the cup finals - surely there are some positives to draw from. The guy knows how to compete.

Is he slowing down? Yep no doubt about it.

Out of the league in a few years? Sure most likely

But I disagree that no one in the room will listen to him or that he wont make a difference on the kids. Babcock needs guys in the room that will march to his beat, lead by example. Polak's one of those vets who will help enforce this. Morgan is still young, definitely capable but young and learning.

some people do not realize that vets bring more to the table than just on ice performance.
