Schultz is an upgrade over Girardi, so yes. Sign him. Klein has shown us he can't play top pairing minutes for a very long time, McIlrath needs to be eased into more playing time, and Girardi is barely capable of 3rd pair minutes. While he's not ideal, Schultz is still a better option than all three right now. We basically just need him to hold the fort until Rath gets some more experience and can play the first pair. Sign him to a one year deal for as cheap as possible. - SpeedBlue91

Ever since becoming an NHLer, Schultz has sucked. He sucked last year. He sucked the year before that. And he sucked the year before that. Basically, he has no NHL history of doing anything else other than sucking.
The guy that you claim he is better than has had over 100 NHL playoff games, playing against the other team's best players, and doing so for 20 + minutes a night.
Girardi wasn't very good last year, I'll grant you that. But to claim Justin "(frank)ing" Schultz, who has never done a damn thing in the league, other than royally (frank)ing sucking, is better than Girardi is kind of an insult to Girardi.

I like McIlrath but if he becomes our 1st pair the Rangers are in some serious poop.

Agreed 100%
A lot of penguins fans saying today that Schultz isn't as bad defensively as his reputation suggests. I just don't think he was on the Penguins long enough for the fans to see his deficiencies, kind of like how we all thought Yandle's rep of being a liability was overblown because he was so steady defensively only to have him become a ticking time bomb this past season

What about signing Schenn to play top pair with McD and trade Klein? Kind of a stop gap until Shattenkirk(if we realistically think we're going to sign him) as being our #1. I love Klein, guy is a warrior but with 2 years remaining and Shattenkirk on the horizon decisions have to be made. Schenn also gives McD a stay at home dman that can be physical.
McD Schenn
Skeji Girardi
Staal McIlrath
Holden
If we're able to sign Shattenkirk next year drop Schenn to 2nd pair
McD Shattenkirk
Skeji Schenn
Staal McIlrath
Holden
Due to Girardi's age, he either bounces back and we can trade him or he has another poor year and we buy him out.

Would only be for a year and his job would be a stay at home dman to allow McD to use his offensive creativity. I've always liked his physical style of play and think it could be a good match with McD.

Going from Klein to Schenn would be a huge downgrade
I think you have to have been actually good at one point to get to be labeled on the decline though - jimbro83
That bad? I actually like what I've seen from the guy. Has he lived up to where he got drafted? No. But I don't think he's a liability out there. Bring him here and just let him know his job is to be a stay at home dman, let McD do his thing, keep the crease clear for Hank and stand up for his teammates when necessary. I don't think we'd be disappointed to be honest.
