Victor Rask: Six-year, $24 million deal with Hurricanes

Would love to lock Miller up to that deal

Miller has better advanced metrics than Rask. He is closer to Trochek and Reilly Smith, not as good, so if could reach a deal at $4.25-$4.5 mil, that would be fair. If lower, even better.

Do you forget that Miller put forth the most consistent effort of ANY forward on the team last season? Or that he put up career highs in just about every category?

IF they bridge everyone like you seem to want then come 2 years from now you will be begging for that type of deal while they will be asking for 6 mil per.

Or that he put up a consistent effort and still only put up a handful of goals in the second half of the season...

Yea the most consistent effort of any forward, for about 50 games of the season.

You're not remembering his full season from start to finish correctly.

Also I think Zucc was our best and most consistent forward.

We also just don't have the cap space to sign everybody to long term deals worth 4.5M+ at the same time

Works both ways, you give every young guy a long contract you will be begging someone to take some of them off your hands if they poop the bed. Also if you give all these players decent money and forgo some bridge deals, you most likely will never have any cap to pick up high end players.

how many others would be coming up soon for that type of deal? If can sign Kreider and Miller to similar deals as Rask, you likely are saving money on back end of the deal

To put in terms you understand, scoring was pretty close, ages are close, Kreider is older by two years, each are top-six players, with Rask having a slight edge as a center while Kreider and Miller are way more physical than Rask.

Or overpaying significantly for a 3rd liner after they don't reach their potential.

buy out Girardi and you have the room to give Kreider and Miller 5 year deals

I agree, but how high did we think Kreider's ceiling was? Turns out it might be made of plexiglass.

Yeah, but Miller for all his faults has always played hard. I would give him a longer deal over any of the rfa's. Thats a risk I would take. But to start being all homer and giving all our young players long deals is just horrible business sense.

Not that I'm opposed to that, but it's just not gonna happen. And even if you do do that and one or both of Kreider/Miller don't reach their ceiling, then we're stuck with like 13M of dead cap space for Kreider, Miller and Girardi.

The bridge vs long term debate could go on forever. I've always felt the rangers have chosen to bridge as many RFAs as possible in order to have more cap space to pay for depth or to have more money to throw around in free agency. For example, you could either extend Miller for 4.5M per year, or bridge him for 2M and then bring in another depth player for 2.5M.

I understand your view, but believe both are worth it. Will be interesting to see if either gets a long term deal

Yet still had 40+ points, picks up his game in the playoffs, can provide a physical presence, even though he must be more consistent. Was Rask worth $4 mil? Trochek $4.75 mil? Reilly Smith $4.5 mil?

This where I disagree Jan, Kreider uses his physicality probably 10 games a year. I don't care what the hits stats say( which is literally the worst subjective stat out there) the guy should be knocking players on their ass every game at his size and strength. 99% of the time he stays on the boards and waits for Stepan to lead him down the wing with speed. God forbid he has to stick handle.

I understand this view, so would you just walk away from him completely?
