Depends on the length of the contract. For example. if Grabner only signed for one year, he would be a free agent by the expansion draft. Since two years, he has to be protected or exposed in the draft, the latter is what the Rangers will do with him.

UFA can't be claimed, they are available to sign when free agency begins. Why if you deal for him, you need to have a tacit, undisclosed agreement as to a deal but don't sign him until after the expansion draft

Gotcha, thanks for the clarification

After reading up on it, we could ask Girardi and Staal to waive to be eligable to be drafted by the expansion team. Same with Nash but I don't think he will be here for that. Looking at our team how it stands now, we likely lose Klein, Holden or McIlrath to the draft.
