And if they can't replace him... do we keep JVR for 7.5 mil?

We are not winning the cup next season. We do not need to be patient when it comes to him. What if he gets injured just before the deadline in his final year?

- domi_legend

Sounds pretty immediate to me. Unless not being patient has some other meaning I don't know about...

You bet your ass JVR is on the opening day roster.

Ideally with Kadri and Marner as linemates

Lou is not going to move him for D help until we have seen what Zaitsev is, what kind of strides Carrick and Marincin will make, etc.

Dealing with the hole on the top D pair is a part of the pain that we are still going to be feeling for the next season or two

Don't get me wrong, this year's Leafs will be exciting, and could even surprise and pull a Colorado from a couple years ago if Andersen stands on his head every night.

But odds are, Leafs will be play with more structure, be way more fun to watch, and be only slightly improved in the standings.

Just a guess

I think Chiarelli wanted a young, right shot, fair salaried Defenseman that still has upside but is capable of top line minutes. There are few players that for the bill and he wasn't going into free agency without one. His desperation made it a foregone conclusion that he would have to overpay. This was simply a lack of options .

I remember all the "trolls" in the Oilers thread who said they wouldn't get as much as they thought for Hall, RNH and Eberle. Even Hendo would get involved telling the "trolls" they knew nothing and those guys would back a king's ransom even though they played for the Oilers.

Please show me where it says that the trade needs to be immediate.

Antti Niemi.

seems like the most logical choice for Leafs as a backup goalie.
1y and then expose him at expansion draft.

You guys could probably get Mike Condon on waivers for nothing.

He's nothing great and obviously can't be a #1 for an extended period of time but he'd be decent as a backup playing 20 something games.

thankfully the leafs aren't stupid enough to trade JVR

i have to say it again i guess

the leafs have 2... count them 2 top 6 forwards with experience... kadri and jvr

if you are the type of GM who trades from an area of team weakness you wont be a GM for long.

you trade assets that you are flush in... for the leafs right now that is prospects. if you cant get the deal you want using the assets you have to spare then you dont do the deal... plain and simple.

also... food for thought... do you not think that other GMs are aware that JVR will be looking for a raise as well? who the hell is going to trade a top notch RFA defensemen for a guy who's contract is up in two years making him a UFA?

FOR SALE:

Previously-loved goaltender. Still runs great, despite a few minor dings. High mileage, but still gets you where you need to be.

I don't want to give this baby up, but I have two more and I need to free up some money to buy other toys.

Motivated seller. Asking for 4th round pick OBO. I have attached a picture below.

Product's looks may vary if dressed in only blue and white.

Totally understand.

But considering the Leafs have low expectations coming into next season (right?) why give up any assets to acquire Niemi when you can get a Condon for nothing?

Andersen is going to be in net for most of the season anyway.

I guess a cup contender could think about it....

Or someone with too many NHL defensemen like Anaheim.

But I agree with you.

Halak for a 4th is a deal Leafs will make any day of the week.
He might outplay Andersen though..

a team looking to win now, obviously..

Building a team isn't any different from building any other business.. You need to be proactive instead of reactive. Weed out the problems before they become problems. I think the Subban trade and Radulov signing were very reactive and wont pan out well..

Agree.
Brown, Leivo, Kapanen, Carrick, Nielsen, Loov, Leipsic, Lindberg, Hyman, Dermott, Soshnikov, Timashov are the pieces that Leafs should use to get a topline D.
Not sure that's going to get us one though.

Not that the Leafs are hurting for money, but seems like it could be a bit expensive to be tying up $9.5M in goaltenders. Halak still has two years on his contract, too. But it would definitely provide stability between the two of them splitting time.

Why would the Isles trade Halak though?

Who's their 2nd goaltender nowadays?

I dont think the expectations are low..

I think thats the storyline the sadistic leafs fans are accustomed to and its a disease.

The goal is the playoffs. We aren't tanking for picks anymore. Backups always come out of the blue so i dont see any reason to trade for one.

Different kind of players, but JVR's cap hit makes him even more desirable/valuable because 29 other teams would want to take a crack at him at that cap hit.

But there's zero point in moving JVR now unless it's for a young, really good top 4 defenseman, but those are hard to find and we'd have to give up a lot along with JVR to do so.

- gravyface

Taylor Hall has a way better contract than JVR

Really?

I think you'll grow to love (read: hate) Brown when he scores a bunch against Montreal.

6 points in 7 games in your first NHL stint ain't so bad
