I think they have some young players that can pick up the scoring we parted with when he left. On the other hand, I think the defensive responsibility Backes brings could help mask a glaring gap of talent on the back end. It's sad when you look at the forwards you have and have more faith in their defensive capabilities than most of your dmen.
We didn't have an issue scoring and I don't see his absence having any major effect on that and I think Backes may bring a new sense of identity to the team and make us "harder" to play against. All in all we're (frank)ed because our defense is an absolute joke.
The term on that Backes deal though
Edit: I realize I didn't answer your question. I'm channeling my inner 2016 politician. I'd honestly say better and I think Vesey comes to Boston and adds some much needed depth to the wing. It's tough to pinpoint what Bruins team you're going to get. Sometimes last year they looked like a playoff team and others they looked like a basement dweller. - RickJames77
I don't get why people are so high on Vesey. You can count the NHL players that come out of that part of the NCAA on one hand. Best of them is probably Killorn. |

The "we don't have to give up anything to get him" factor.

TBH that's not a bad addition. There's no question that Bozak is NHL caliber, but he has been miscast here for too long as a top line forward, and the fans have soured on him as such.
Given that he has a touch higher PPG than fourth overall Evander "Money" Kane, he's been a decent enough pick up... |

there are some good players that come from the NCAA.... for instance andy mcdonald (now retired) came out of colgate university and finished his career with nearly 500 points
i'd call that a successful career |

he's gonna want guaranteed top 6 minutes... no way in hell babcock just hands that to a rookie without him proving his worth in camp first.
also... i hear "team first" comments coming from leafs management... this kid doesnt really strike me as someone who is in that particular mold |

I'm pretty excited about them this year. They finally have the defense headed in the right direction. Hoping that Provorov makes the squad this year and becomes the next Gostisbehere. We could use a goal scoring winger. The goaltending seems solid. - Flyfreaky

Not the NCAA. The ECAC and in particular the Ivy Leagues. The NCAA has multiple divisions and nobody is saying that massive beasts like Michigan and Wisconsin don't produce real talent.
Also McDonald and St. Louis are old news. Teams are less likely to pass on midgets that weigh 150lbs at 18 these days...see Marner, Mitch |
