Milton may not be a big place but we have streets named Bundy Babcock and Clark. |

We have as much quslity depth on winh as we do D. Which is slim to none. Most of that list is either too old and broken or too young and unreliable/proven. Why is that list more impressive than Rielly Gardiner Zaitsev Polak Corrado Marancin Carrick? - systemtool
Rielly is a for sure #1 defensemen. Zaitsev apparently is good enough to play top pairing according to a lot of people. Gardiner really made strides last year but he will never be better then a #3 defensemen. Carrick showed some skill and ability as a top-4 damn last year.
So essentially we have enough depth in defense with Corrado, Marincin, Hunwick and Polak for the bottom pairings. Zaitsev will most likely be a 2nd pairing guy which will still leave either a need for a #2 or #3 defensemen depending on Zaitsev.
Currently Nylander, Soshnikov, Lupul, Michalek and Brown are all very capable in the top six. If you add Marner to that list it makes 6 guys competing for 4 spots.
We have loads of depth at wing currently and from all the picks Hunter has made you would have to imagine at least two of then are going to be very good picks.
Defense is the core if we have a great top 4 and a rotating bottom pairing we can be set for when we do challenge for the playoffs.
Having JVR waste his term and value away while scoring meaningless goals seems counterproductive, why not get a top pairing defensemen for him?
He'll be a UFA before we're even competing. |

Lupul and Michalekare done. They'll be Lou'd or broken in a month Hyman and Sosh are about as proven and reliable at this point as Marancin and Corrado. You say Rielly is a number one but who is our top winger? Brown, Komarov, Nylander?
I would also like an explanation of how much more JVR could get in a trade today than he would in a year from now. Give me some examples, compareables, evidence and gauge of what the difference would be. Teams give up alot all the time at the deadline for rentals and we can always trade him later wth still one year left.
Phaneuf was great on the Flames yet they moved on and he came here and stank. Our team was weaker than theirs. Komisarek was great on the Habs who were better as a team defensively, came here and stank. Fowler may or may not have the same fate here but I'd rather not gamble. I know who and what JVR is and I'm comfortable with that. |

I once thought moving JVR for a top young dman was a good idea, but I've since changed my mind. Whoever they squire will have to be better than Gardiner/Zaitsev/Carrick because one of them will have to be exposed in the exp draft. I understand the logic behind not choosing a dman from a poor defensive team but most of us feel that these three guys are somewhat capable. |

Zaitsev won't need to be protected. The 3 defenceman that will are Reilly, Gardiner, Carrick. |

I think JVR to the Wild or Ducks is the best fit. Looking at Fowler or Dumba.. |

Zaitsev is on a one year deal, RFA at seasons end. No need to protect him. Carrick would be the same if he only signs for a 1 year. I think you're going to see a lot of 1 year deals to RFAs this year provided there still young because of the upcoming expansion draft. This is something to keep in mind for a backup goalie too; why go and trade for a younger goalie who you would have to leave unprotected, when you can bring in an older goalie with less value, or trade a spare part for one and not have to worry about them getting scooped from the roster. |

This whole situation reminds me of Phaneuf. Bringing one guy in isn't going to fix anything and that guy will get crushed under the pressure and ran out of town. This team will fix it's defensive woes with good goaltending and listening to Babcock coaching. In other words a team commitment to fixing the D, not by making a trade. And of we did trade JVR and "improved" our d....who the (frank) is going to score for us? Talk about extra pressure on the "yout"
Not sure Bozak, Kadri and Komo is enough offensive veterans to insulate the Matthews Nylanders Browns and Marners - systemtool
Great post man.
A lot of sensibility and thought put into it.
Decent analogy. |

LOL Original Six and I played since I was 6 years old ( and probably at a higher level than you). Morgan Reilly has nearly limitless potential, but he is FAR from a true #1 dman in the NHL at this point. The Bandwagon chirp is so unoriginal and not even applicable. The Hawks are an Original Six team with more Cups before the Salary Cap Dynasty than your franchise has in its entire existence. Also, check the NHL draft/ central scouting to see how many NHL prospects are coming out of Chicago youth hockey before calling any Hawks fan a "bandwagoner". What kind of "Bandwagon fan" is on a hockey blog in July? LOL |
