Leafs may want to make a deal with the stars to grab one of their goalies and grab a value player like Faksa or honka, obviously having to add more to get it done; but the stars are very deep with young talent and are very hot for fleury or bishop....I wouldn't be surprised.

I'd rather JVR over Fowler. And regardless, Matthews and Kadri deserve someone with skill, experience, decent size and scoring ability to play with. The value in that is over looked.

It's definitely a realistic trade proposal. I'm a big fan of both players. I guess it all depends on what position you value the most.

They need both. It should not have to be one or the other.
- systemtool

Perhaps they don't tamper too much with the defence because they believe that one of their prospects has top pairing potential. It would be an incredible break if one of Zaitsev, Carrick, Nielsen or Dermott could be good enough to pair with Rielly for years to come. Reality suggests otherwise though, so if the opportunity to obtain a good defender presents itself the Leafs should make the deal.

If the Leafs could obtain Honka I would be exceptionally happy.

To me it comes down to this. Adding to what we have. Not trading this for that and still having areas of need. Grow the team. Don't take a good player and trade him for a good player. In the end well still need a good player. I want to build a good team. Not just a good position.

We need wingers and Dmen right now. No sense trading one for the other.

This whole situation reminds me of Phaneuf. Bringing one guy in isn't going to fix anything and that guy will get crushed under the pressure and ran out of town. This team will fix it's defensive woes with good goaltending and listening to Babcock coaching. In other words a team commitment to fixing the D, not by making a trade. And of we did trade JVR and "improved" our d....who the (frank) is going to score for us? Talk about extra pressure on the "yout"

Not sure Bozak, Kadri and Komo is enough offensive veterans to insulate the Matthews Nylanders Browns and Marners

It's a good debate. We'll know what the team thinks when they tell us what moves they make.

You're forgetting the bottom 6 depth veterans like Michalek, Laich and Martin. They don't touch JVR offensively but bring size and veteran stability. Leafs have much more depth on the wing going forward than they do defense. This trade is about the future not the present...imo

That's like saying they have Polak and Hunwick so they don't need anyone else.

Plain and simple. I think Fowler brings more value to the Leafs than JVR does. He's younger and plays a more important role to the team.

Alrighty then! I'm sure he'll be just as effective with the Leafs in front of him as Anaheim.

Try this one out.

Wow that AC works great in your insulated home of 1200 square feet! Can't wait to get that baby in my rickety warehouse of 5400 square feet and feel that cold air!

lol what does that have to do with anything? He's proved himself to be a quality defencemen on a very good team. I'd much rather trade for a player playing big minutes on a good team than a player playing big minutes on a garbage team..

I'd argue that.
Leafs when healthy have JVR, Michalek, Lupul, Nylander, Komarov, Soshnikov, Hyman, Brown, Leivo and hell if Marner stays he isn't gonna be playing bottom six so add him too.

JVR has term, value and his cap hit should be closer to 6.5M per year but has a 4.25M cap hit.
We have so many (frank)ing wingers and we just drafted a bunch of 19-20 year old wingers who will only need 3-4 years max before battling for roster spot.

I actually love this idea. We send one of the wingers we got from Ottawa for a goalie and a top piece like Honka or a 1st. Might be too pricey for Dallas but maybe we can add in someone we are not a big fan of in training camp to sweeten the deal.

Greening, Holland, Corrado
For
Niemi / Lehtonen, Honka, 2nd

Or something along the lines of that. Send some decent young guys but let's face it, bottom line players for a potential top 4D and a high pick all to take on a veteran goalie cap dump.

We have as much quslity depth on winh as we do D. Which is slim to none. Most of that list is either too old and broken or too young and unreliable/proven. Why is that list more impressive than Rielly Gardiner Zaitsev Polak Corrado Marancin Carrick?
