Yeah lets just shave off a few pounds to suit our arguements
- Tanooki

ok 163? 164? What does it really matter with respect to my argument. I was 230 when I weighed myself a couple of days ago, and I weigh in at 225 today... at the end of the day, I'm still overweight. And end of the day Marner is on the smaller side.

With all the advantages (due to financial power) Leafs have vs other teams, do you really think Leafs should be 'permitted' to have as long a rebuild as some of the other low-budget teams in NHL?

Getting rid of contracts like Phaneuf, Clarkson, even Bernier (with the 2mln bonus payment) and others is a thing that only Leafs and a select few other teams can do due to their finances. In my opinion, through this, they can speed up a rebuild by 2-3 years.

In my view the Leafs have been rebuilding since 2008 season anyways - they haven't done quite well, but I think 8y patience is quite long enough.

Even with a very very long rebuild (let's say try and make playoffs in 2019-2020 season) you never have a guarantee to make it beyong quarterfinals; patience is ok, but an organisation like the Leafs should have in its DNA to battle for playoffs and cup every single season. Whether that's realistic or not is a second question, but in my view it's quite sad to 'accept' a bottom 10 place in standings for 3-5 years being the Leafs.. (even if we agree on expecting a bottom 10 place!).

I'm not that enthousiastic about Leafs' current rebuild either; nothing spectacular done in the last few years (easy to make the right picks in top10 anyways) and apart from the moves executed due to the mentioned strong financial position, nothing really superb done (missing out on Stamkos being biggest illustration of that).
So far, I would give Shanahan and Friends a 'C' for their rebuild, nothing more.

- MaximusAurelius

Wow, it's hard to even repond to this. Missing out on Stamkos? It was his choice, they can't force him to sign.

Where have you been, this management team has done things properly, and made good solid decisions. Good drafting(in early/later rounds), good trades for good assets(Rychel, Andersson, picks, etc), reasonable contracts, and they are handling their prospects much better in general.

Not sure what you expect them to do, go all Jim Benning?

Pffft.

Ekblad signed his ELC in the September of his draft year. MacKinnon mid July. This is just the media with (frank) all else to do being the dumb mittenstringers that they are...

I don't understand why people think a 19 year old 160 lb kid is a sure thing to make an NHL roster, just because he has the raw skillset
- Nastradamus

You are leaving out some important details.

He has posted some of the best numbers all time for a CHL player reg season, playoffs, memorial cup ..

He also only has 2 options, 1 being the leafs.

I think we can all agree if the AHL was an option, that's where he would be starting the 2016-17 season.

Sadly, it isn't.

So if the Leafs are looking for what is best for his development, it's (at least in my opinion) hard to understand what he can gain by going back to the OHL.

He basically won everything he could. Individual trophies, team trophies.

He needs to now learn how to play the pro game.

I think sending him back to the OHL makes him a worse NHL player, not better.

Which is great, dominating the OHL does not necessarily mean that he is ready for the NHL. That is just reality, assuming he is, is just wishful thinking at this point. He may be, I'm not saying there's not a good possibility he could be, but we'll have to wait and see if he'll earn a spot

Perhaps, he'll have to earn his spot. He's doing a good job of tempering expectations for himself by publically saying the right things about the possibility of having to go back, however.
