I'm pretty sure their counter offer is going to be substantial, based on preliminary talks yesterday
So here's my situation:
New job is a 5k bump over my current salary, plus full health & dental coverage, disability and life insurance, and a 5% pension strategy that is matched by the company. Plus it is a bit closer to where I live, so less commute. The trade off is less remote work (ie. from home)
The offer my current company may be making is potentially 20k more than my current salary, but is just a flat paycheck. No bells and whistles whatsoever.
Now, $$ isn't everything but I can't help but do a double take at that if its put on the table.
What sucks is the optics. It completely looks like I'm trying to use my manager's passing as a way to gouge the company, meanwhile the new offer was there before it even happened. - WingmanWillie
People today have absolutely no idea how valuable a good pension plan is.
It's worth a helluva lot more than a little bit more on your paycheque.
Is it defined benefit or defined contribution? |

At the risk of being called a cold-hearted bastard, have they thought about who is going to get the manager's position?
Could that be you? - Atomic Wedgie
I'm wondering if that might be why they needed the 48 hours to consider a counter offer.
I'd be lying if I said it hadn't once crossed my mind |

Not sure the difference.
5% of my salary goes into a pension fund, which is then matched by the company |

Take the new job.
For various reasons.
Companies that can only offer you an important increase when you tell them you're going to leave them are not worth working for.
Unless they agree to pay you the difference over last 3 years (60k bonus payment) which you could consider taking and then leave in 6-12 months to a new position from now when the company has reorganised and is more better able to compensate for loss of 2 employees in a month.
staying at you current company would still mean you'll be there for max 2 years.
You can use the counter-offer in discussions with your new company though.
At least let them know (even if you're going to accept their offer) that your current company offered you the 20k increase. Maybe you can use in future negotiations (brining it in right now) or increase the current offer. - MaximusAurelius
I have definitely considered keeping this in my back pocket

think its 2.25 ..but yes seems like a lot
Leafs are putting a lot of value on some players who can set a good example I guess.. Polak, Clune with the Marlies. Polak for 1 year doesnt bother me if he main mandate is to just get the young players to be professionals, focus on poop that matters |

Yes. But i think Lou loves reeling the media in.
Remember last year when people were pissed that Dermott got his ELC a week before Marner?. As if it was an insult to Mitch.
If I was Lou, I'd (frank)ing you lot around along with the media every chance i get. Then sit back and watch the level of spazz |

I used to think this. It was the way I was raised: just work hard and people will notice and reward you.
Turns out that's crap. You need to drive your career. You need to decide what you want and go after it. |

I hardly doubt Marner and Nylander look to Polak as a guy who sets examples..
He might teach them how to hits guys from behind or something |

I am assuming here that Willie has always indicated he was looking for a nice increase in salary at current company. (and never an option until right now) |

Really big difference. Worth your while to find out.
Defined benefit is the better one. It basically means that you contribute X amount every pay cheque, and upon your retirement, you are guaranteed Y amount every month.
Once upon a time, most pensions were like this. But it's harder to administer, and the company can end up with huge pension obligations if the returns on investments aren't what the actuaries hoped for/projected.
So companies started converting pensions to defined contributions. Simplest way to think of these is like a big RRSP. You contribute X amount every pay cheque, and your money is returned to you upon retirement based upon how well the investments did.
In theory, your returns on a defined contribution pension could be greater than under a defined benefits plan, but in theory I could have ridden a unicorn to work.
Take a look at your offer. Don't get me wrong, a defined contribution plan is waaaaaaaay better than no pension at all. But a defined benefit plan is even betterer.
Yeah, I just said betterer.

Sounds like defined contribution ie the 5%s from you and the company vs. a pension that agrees pay you a set defined amount when you retire.
Pension plan and other benefits are important as you and your family progress. |

First thoughts: this is being carried out by forces more organized than some crazy lone wolf black folks. IF it's indeed a few angry black people, they are 100% suicidal and ready to die as American villains (as the media would surely make them out to be). However, I doubt any black folks would be bold enough to try and take out 11 cops in a downtown metro area after several innocent black men were killed by cops. This stinks of Cointelpro-style FBI involvement.
The "sniper" was an amazing shot, somehow only picking off cops out of the large crowd.
The "sniper" had intimate knowledge of building and street layouts to be able to navigate, hide, shoot and escape before being seen.
The "sniper" was able to escape detection by all the video cameras in downtown Dallas.
Something tells me it's not a few lone wolf black folks. If I'm wrong, I'll be the first to admit it. But this just feels a little too convenient. - domi_legend
