I think that's pretty wild speculation. Johnson went home and signed for almost $2M. Murray clearly wants a backup. That's too much money for a backup. And who's to say Johnson wouldn't have wanted more than what he got to stay here? Having 2 starting caliber goalies is tricky and almost never works. Look at Dallas in the playoffs, they couldn't decide who to play and it likely cost them. The only reason St. Louis got away with it was because Allen got hurt and Elliot was the only choice and even then there was a controversy late in the playoffs. And it still ended with Elliot on his way out of town partly because the situation was untenable and partly because of expansion. Vancouver was the same with Luongo and Schneider. Detroit doesn't know what to do with their two goalies. One of them will likely be gone before the season. Ditto with Tampa and Bishop.

You need to have a clear starter and a clear backup.

I agree with clear starter and clear back-up. My point is Murray anointed Lehner the be all end all. He very well might be but I'm not convinced yet. I felt a higher caliber back-up could push Lehner to rise to the challenge or fall by the way side. Nillson is about as good as a bag of pucks.

This goes a couple years back as well. For Murray it's always been about Lehner. We've let some good goalies after Miller walk out the door. Halak, Neuvirth, Enroth, etc. Any one of those would have been the type of guy I'm talking about to make Lehner prove he's the go to man.

I think Johnson surprised Murray quite frankly. He shouldn't have been that good last year. His prize was to walk out the door for a nice raise. That's good for him.

As it stands everything has been handed to Lehner on this team because there hasn't been any options on the team that are better. I don't agree with that.

Like I said, it's been my only criticism of Murray to this point.

GMTM refuses to bring in any goalies that threatens Lehner. Johnson was surprisingly good and Murray said see ya. My only criticism of him. God help up us if Lehner is not as good as Murray thinks he is or he gets hurt AGAIN!

Poor planning. Competition makes everyone better. Is he trying not to hurt Lehner's feelings?

- TheKreamedKorn

I believe they do have faith in Lehner or at the very least he will have this year to prove it's not misplaced. He played well during his stretch last year on what turned out to be a not fully healed ankle. He stayed in Buffalo to workout this summer. Working out period wasn't a luxury he had much of last summer given his concussion. He should be in better shape this year. The jury is still out but his stretch last year was promising. They may be getting force-fed it but i do believe they're comfortable with Ullmark if needed.

On Johnson, i don't believe that decision had anything to do with us. He made mention last year about how hard it was being away from home having spent all of his years on the east coast. He was afforded the pay raise and the opportunity to go homeward in free agency and took it.

I do enjoy the championing of Johnson. This was a guy that everybody, and i mean everyone bagged on when we got him. The cries of Ocho Tanko. Nobody thought Johnson could do what he did last year. Who's to say that Nilsson couldn't if afforded a long stretch in the nets.

Not sure what post you're referring too. Also never been a fish fan. I usually stick to chicken, beef, turkey.

I know, then you dont trade a first for him. You dont put all your eggs in his basket. You dont let him start playing until he is in shape.

Murray has been watching him for years . Watched him win him an AHL title. Mr Murray has had some good luck with goaltenders . I think Lehner will be just fine.

I think moving forward he'll be fine. I think they were a little hasty in getting him in playing time, but he looked relatively solid in preseason, even had a shutout if I remember correctly. It's not like they were going all out when the regular season rolled around it was just practice against other teams. That's how they treated it anyway. And he got unlucky. It probably made it worse that he was a bit heavier than what he normally plays at, but he hits that rut regardless of his weight. And then coming back from that injury probably wasn't the wisest thing to do, but he's a competitor. We do whole memes about it. There was no way he was sitting if he was able to be ~85%, so he went back in. And given the fact he hadn't played in basically a year and couldn't even exercise for at least half that time he played lights out. And once it was clear we were way out of a playoff spot they shut him down again to give him an extra months rest to really gear up for this upcoming season.

Wow, that was rambly... Meh, (frank) it. Nobody reads this poop anyway.

Max,i agree with you. The problem is,i have the same text from a person in the know about another player. Murray fell in love with kane in juniors and had to have him. He was playing as a man among boys. Murray didnt pay attention to all the red flags, how is that working out

Agreed. (yeah I red it)

Every Goalie can get injured. Doesn't matter who they are . But cause it was OUR goalie , Some think it's the end of the world and need a different one. And then that one gets hurt and it starts all over again. He should be healthy at the start of this season and I'm willing too back him. We have yet to see how he will work out. He is still pretty young .

He has a few incidents of ice . Who cares if he produces on the ice. I don't need my players to be choir boys. Good thing there was no social media in the 70's and 80's while I was young.

35 points. Marcus Foligno would be impressed

Seriously, I get people that want to keep Kane around. But call a spade a spade. In 18 months he's been a complete dud so far
