absolutely hit the nail on the head with Zibby to Fisher.

With respect to Duchene, seems like a lot of us are still having that in our minds since the rumors in the season. I think it's possible but I think someone would have to blow the socks off. I can see it later in his career.

I think the Sens should seriously look at bringing Matt Bartkowski here long term. He played well in Boston but really had a strong year in Vancouver. Problem is that he will likely look for a top 4 role (top 4 $)

Well there were the Duchene talks at the start of the year and than at the end of the year both Sakic and Roy put him and the whole team on blast for not being good enough. Then said big changed were coming. and now he's been in the rumor mill non stop lately. Same with all the other players I mentioned other than Schenn.

I think we can afford to give up some picks in a trade as well. Our prospect pool is pretty deep as it is and we simply don't have the room to bring up everyone. So I think it's time we start to go big on some trades to being in Duchene like players and make some room for the young guys.

One trade I will never understand. Is Edmonton wanted D and had acquired about Wier, and Sens didn't want him anyways and need more offense. Why not give it a chance and do Wier for Yak. It's a win win for both teams and instead we just let him go for nothing.

So it's basically the same bunch that won 2 playoff games in 3 seasons, and some B+ prospects that people are talking about the way they used to talk about Puemple, Lazar, Wiercioch et al.

Meanwhile, Cheapo pocketed a huge media deal last year, and expansion money this year....

I simply don't get why people continue to call Eugene Melnyk cheap ....

As it stands, according to Capcentral, Ottawa's cap hit is about $61M. After they sign Hoffman, Ceci, Puemple and Dzingel, it will be somewhere around $70-71M. Plus they want to add a depth forward and a depth D, both of which would cost $1-1.5M each.

The last I read on the cap is that is should be around $74M. So, Ottawa will be just shy of the cap .... explain to me how is that cheap???

I think that is the consensus, yes.

NHL numbers has them at 52M, cap friendly has them at 55M, spotrac has them at 56M.

The one here on hockeybuzz always has teams higher than they are.

At any rate, the Sens are in the bottom 1/4, and on most sites, bottom 1/5 of the league.

The Canadian dollar sucks, sure, but that has been more than offset by the massive TV contracts they just got from Sportsnet/TSN. The American teams aren't getting huge TV dollars like that.

I don't care if the Sens are in the top 5 when it comes to spending, and frankly, unless you are going for the cup, it's stupid to be that high. But to be in the bottom 5-8 teams in the league is a joke and a total slap in the face to the fans.

The only circumstance a team with this many revenue streams should be that low in spending is if they are rebuilding. Are we rebuilding? Eugene sure as hell wouldn't say it.

wow, that a huge discrepancy..... how the hell does one know who's right????

I agree that they don't need to be in the top 5, but somewhere in the 8-15 range, given where they are in their cycle ......

I would expect that they will move into the T5 over the next three years as they hit their peak (and hopefully are contending for the cup).

Woah, why would you expect that? It goes against everything Melnyk has said for the last 5+ years.

He has said repeatedly that we aren't going to be a cap team.

he has consistently said that he is willing to spend money when the situation/time is right .... that isn't right now.

Adding free agent signings at this point in the team's development doesn't make sense, but it will between now and the end of Karlsson's current contract (3 years from now)

Thomas Chabot failed to impress during the Senators' development camp.
"I thought Thomas should have been a bit more intense, I thought Thomas should have dominated," said Senators assistant GM Randy Lee. "I think Thomas should look at the landscape and see we’ve got six signed defencemen (to NHL contracts) … Thomas and I have talked about it." Chabot had 45 points and 79 penalty minutes in 47 QMJHL games in 2015-16. He has plenty of potential and perhaps the harsh assessment during the team's development camp will light a fire under him and lead to him coming out stronger during training camp.

I think the real issue here has been the asset management of the previous Murray regime. There simply is not enough talent to justify spending to the cap.

Going through free agency rarely provides value for dollars spent and is not a good blueprint for building a successful team.

NHL Numbers seems the most accurate...Spotrac for examples lists EVERY contract players the team has including AHLers/2-way contracts like Ben Harpur, Robinson, Varone, etc...
Those salaries do not count towards the cap if they aren't playing in the NHL... Even 1-way contract in the AHL will have a 950k discount on them...

So the Sens currently have 9 NHL forwards (up to debate if you put Nick Paul, Dzingel or Puempel as NHLers), 5 NHL D and 2 NHL goalies signed...they have a little over 20M left in cap space with mainly Ceci (3-4?) and Hoffman (5-5.5?) left to sign...
So about 11-12M left under the cap once they are signed...
Then they will need to sign Z, Pageau, Smith & Lazar next year...
Stone, Turris and 2 goalies (who?) the year after...
