Some blogger said he didn't have to be. - the_eye[MiB]
So i believed him.
its 2 years or less... after next season he will have played 3 pro seasons
so the 2 year rule wont apply to him |

Sure, because the Sharks went to the final riding on his back, not Couture, Burns, Jumbo and Pavelski - lumlums

Nylander's exempt isn't he Lums? Give us the reasoning...I'm cottageing at the moment and 1/2 gassed. - Garnie
He is. I don't believe that he's considered to have played enough. I am however basing this on what I've seen via Twitter and on General Fanager (which is usually pretty accurate but not always). Regardless, we have enough spots to protect him. |

i am pretty sure andersen will be the goalie they protect
the question is... who do they take on to leave exposed? sign bernier for another year? - Dozzer
I meant he will count towards 25% won't he? |

He does, but NTC =/= NMC. Only NMC needs to be protected. - lumlums
i was under the impression that NTC fell under that and that the clause was a generic term
i could be wrong tho |

My guess is they acquire a cheap RFA backup, qualify him and leave him exposed. If he gets taken, fine....replace him with somebody else similar.....and if not, there's your backup goalie for 17/18. |

25% of the salary cap - Dozzer
well that's going to suck for small market teams, the NHL really going to screw them that bad?
If that's the case the Leafs won't lose a thing. |

make a deal with the wings for jimmy howard... expose and him and his salary eats up a ton of the required cap exposure
if he doesnt get taken then you have a great mentor and reliable backup goalie to andersen.
and if andersen turns out to be another bernier (doubt it) you have a capable guy who can step in
EDIT: obviously only make the deal if howard agrees to be exposed |

Wrong.
* Players with potential career-ending injuries who have missed more than the previous 60 consecutive games (or who otherwise have been confirmed to have a career-threatening injury) may not be used to satisfy a club's player exposure requirements, unless approval is received from the NHL. - Iggysbff
Don't have to be protected. Doesn't count against exposure requirements. Two different things. |

I'm pretty sure the Leafs have 24 million dollars of garbage they can expose. |

They cannot expose him without consent of the Nhl. Period.
Dozzer may be correct that if they meet the requirement without him then it's moot. But that will be difficult if Lupul is also on LTIR.
As I said previously though it's all up for arguing until the final roster and season actually take place. - Iggysbff
Wrong. Guys with long term injuries don't have to be protected. |

the phrasing here isnt exactly conclusive one way or another

its the word "may" that bothers me.... if it said "will" that would be far more clearer |

Hat doesn't address protection.... Only talks about the requirements of the cap.
Horton doesn't have to be protected100% |
