Okay, can we please stop putting Luke Schenn into projected line-ups?
If you think that signing Schenn is a good idea, you really need to log off and find a new hobby... - lumlums
Yeah, I instability unboner when I see his name..
I'm hoping one of Loov/Valiev/Dermott surprises..
Also for forwards, let's consider Andreas Johnson.. I think he'll surprise in training camp. |

Here's a line up that could be a good mix of vets/rookies/high-end prospect for next year with two new acquisitions. (One UFA and one trade):
JVR, Kadri, Brown
Leivo, Nylander, Komarov
Rychel, Matthews, Marner
Greening, Laich, Martin
Reilly, Trouba
Gardiner, Zaitsev
Carrick, Schenn
Hunwick
Andersen
Bibeau
. - underhill14
Connor Brown has played 7 NHL games. He won't be on 1st line.
Leivo - see above.

I'd take Mirtle over those listed every single day of the week. Many hate him because he's not a Fanboy, but at least he puts thought and effort into his work. - lumlums
He's far too reliant on analytics over all else, and worse than that is often very sanctimonious in opinion and condescending towards alternative (non-analytics based) views of the game, which unfortunately seems to be an attitude of many individuals online who favour analytics (a large percentage of those who post on PPP for example). I've just never understood where this type of attitude came from.
When you combine all that with how little he has actually played hockey himself in his life (which normally wouldn't be a big deal), it's hard for me to see him beyond a simple writer who strives above all else to generate controversy and forced negativity. Kind of a shame IMO. |

Sooner or later we are going to have to promote players or why else do we have them.
Connor Brown is a great player. So under rated. He would do perfectly well with Kadri and JVR. He also had 6 pts in 7 games.
Leivo...is he a career AHLer? Is he better or worse than Lupul? |

So far it looks like the Leafs are content to pick first overall again next year? - Iggysbff
It would be nice to win the lottery - especially after the protect the Oilers and Sabres of the world lottery rules were changed, but I won't hold my breath. I'll settle for a good management team with a plan rather than a couple of idiot booze can buddies. How's McTavish doing? |

I agree with this. Can't be afraid of putting guys into top roles. And a guy like Brown has excelled at every level so far. While only 7 games, he didn't look out of place at all.

When Lupul is healthy, he is 100 times better than Leivo.
You don't promote a guy to 1st line until he has earned it. Especially in Toronto, because when he inevitably hits avrough patch, the idiots of Leafs Nation will crucify him. |

Some combination of the below players will have to get us Trouba because JVR needs to stay. Even if we could get Vesey, nobody knows how he will do, so JVR should still stay another year at least.
Bozak, Bernier, Holland, Lupul, Michalek, Marincin
Sosh, Hyman, Lindberg, Kapanen
Draft picks.
...I really think Reilly/Trouba will make a big difference to this team, even so much so that losing a high pick/prospect could be worth it. - underhill14
Without a piece like JVR in the mix we are not going to be able to give up enough to get Trouba. There is no way Winnipeg takes a package of 4-5 meh pieces for a potential top player.
That being said I'm fine with standing pat right now. As it is we can protect Reilly, Gardiner, & Carrick from expansion and any defense we get would leave Carrick vulnerable. Not terrible if we get a good deal, but any trade for a top RHD will cost us a fortune. If we stay the course we go into next year with:
JVR, Kadri, ???
Komarov, Bozak, ???
Michalek, Matthews, ???
Greening, Laich, Martin
Froese
Reilly, Zaitsev
Gardiner, Hunwick
Marincin, Carrick
Corrado
Andersen
Bernier
With the following available to fill those three forward spots:
Marner, Nylander, Soshnikov, Hyman, Lupul, Holland, Brown, Kapanen, Leivo.
Should more than three make the team then Greening and/or Michalek are likely our 13th/14th forwards.
Other moves will likely occur but right now this is our lineup and for a rebuilding team there is a lot of variation that can be fun to watch.

I think that you just answered the first part of the bolded with the second part. Assuming that people who believe in stats haven't played the game is both insulting, and wrong.
The idea of analytics is to try and assess previous events to determine what helps a player (or team) to succeed based on events during the game, and to use this to properly which players have a positive effect on playing in the opposing zone more often than not. Despite the claims of some of the "alternative" (as you put it) views, you can't grit or sandpaper the puck into the net that effectively... |

He is a better hockey player though. If he wasn't then the second he was healthy last year we would have hit the waiver wire and then buried in the AHL. Leivo could be a better and obviously a much more healthy player than Lupul but he isn't there yet. |

I hope so, man. Really pulling for him. Feel bad about his injuries, but poop happens. Hope he's healthy now, he seems like he wants to keep playing, has that motivation to keep going no matter what. I like that.
When he's healthy, he's lights out. Even with his injury history, he goes for hits, takes them, and drops the gloves when he doesn't need to (with Schenn & Subban) |

Yup. I'd take Jultz over Schenn 100 times out of 90. They're both likely to get walked around in their own zone, but at least Jultz can handle the puck and get it out of the zone when he does have it on his stick... |
