The Leafs employ how many analytics experts? And their FA signings are Matt Martin and Roman Polak? What's next, Kris Russell?

Advanced stats are a tool. Some people go way overboard with it

Serviceable journeymen contracts. Leafs have a plethora of good young talent, but lack the grit and leadership. Without the intangibles of toughness and grit, those young players would end up getting beaten up on a nightly basis. Intimidation is a big factor in the development of a young player. If he can't develop his skills, the window starts to close very quickly. For the money being spent of a 6th defenseman and a 3rd or 4th line player, it's money well spent for the present.

Well they tried the analytics-based moneypuck approach last season and it got them to last place.

Can't say I blame them for trying something different. Just stay away from Russell please

- WingmanWillie

What exactly are they trying different?
Bringing back the same dman and overpaying a 4th liner?

Not an anchor.....just players that can right the ship, when it's not going very well for the rookies on the team.

We have skill, youth and better goaltending. Do you want to protect what we have, or do you want other teams taking liberties on your rookie core? Who will stand up for players like Marner and Matthews? Who'll protect Andersson, when he starts getting jostled in the crease? You need a mix of toughness and strength to shepherd the sheep. Skill will get you only so far.

Babcock already said that hunwick was his signing. He wanted him.

Fla doing pretty well so far. They changed out 3 dmen and got cheaper replacements that likely mak them better.

Winning is usually the best way to protect and develop your young players.

no its not

these signings show the leafs intend on icing a young roster next year

you need some tougher vets to put out on the ice to hold down the fort when the young guys inevitably get rattled.

What? Do you think that they play ringette out there? This management team has been very good at recognizing holes and weakness in their lineup. They know what they get with Polak. Was he not the one who stood up in the dressing room and denounce the quitters on the team, a couple of years back? Leafs need some sandpaper or they're going to get pushed around.

its not necessarily about protecting them... but lets face it... rookies can be taken off their game by a few different means... its just how it is

protecting them doesnt mean going out there and bullying the opposition... it means having guys you can put out on the ice when the kids need to be taken off of it for a couple shifts

Nah

It was clear last year that the Leafs got pushed around fairly regularly. They were soft as poop. So much so that Babcock had to address it, stating that they would be taking care of some of that this summer.

They are clearly going to roll with the kids, and simply grabbed a couple tougher types to give them some space. It's not Arcobello and Winnik, but whatever.

I'm not thrilled with these off-season moves, minus the Rychel trade, but when you finish last, no additions should really be frowned upon.

Tough guys don't stop stupid stuff from happening. That is a fact.

People, think that signing these guys will stop Matthews marner and Nylander from getting hacked slashed cross checked or hit and stop guys from barrelling over Andersen.

how people dont see the leafs game plan this summer was size

rychel, martin, polak... all 200 plus pounds

anyone expecting the leafs to be anything more than a bottom 10 team is fooling themselves.
