Not sure why we couldn't give Pierre-Alexandre Parenteau a 1 yr 1.25 mil contract. 20 goals 21 assists last yr. We could have fit that in the cap just fine, and of a kid stepped up and/ or he stunk, would have been a easy contract to burry in the minors.

I wonder what Mark Streit could pull from Detroit. They are so thin on defense and not only have a tone of forwards but it doesn't seem like their young core has taken serious steps since entering the league.
Streit and a young player like Hagg or Laughton for Tatar? Detroit just seems like a free fall of stupid lately. |

Ideally I'd have Read in the press box. I think it's time they give Leier a shot, that is assuming Konecny doesn't make the club. |

I'll be as happy as anyone if Konecny makes the team. He definitely adds an element we're missing, absolutely like a young Daniel Briere but I don't think his body is mature enough for the NHL. I'm not holding my breath. |

If Konecny doesn't make the team, I'm going to hazard that it's probably due to all around game more than anything. He's pretty jacked for a little guy -- not sure how much weight gain and muscle he has left to put on. At 5'10" he's never going to be (or shouldn't be) much more than 180-ish which is what he's at. He's one tough little lean mean fighting machine. He's pretty physically developed -- definitely way more than G or Briere were at the same age. Heck, he's maybe more ripped than Briere ever was in his whole career. Perhaps even G. |

They could've, but how do you know Parenteau would've signed with the Flyers? How do you know Hextall didn't make an offer. I don't think we have enough information to state that Hexy dropped the ball.

There are any number of one dimensional guys Hextall could have signed cheaply. Parenteau is just another one on the list.
The Flyers are obviously not interested in guys who aren't capable of playing a two way game. It looks as if they're giving an opportunity to guys like Raffl, Laughton & Cousins to claim a top 6 spot. It also leaves the door open for a guy like Konecny to claim a NHL roster spot.
If they sign a Pirri or Parenteau, or even a more well rounded guy like Jiri Hudler, there's no way Konecny makes the team & guys like Raffl & Laughton are locked into 3rd line duties. |

That's fair, but we also could have buried him in the minors if it didn't work out. I just don't think we acquired enough goals in fa. I hope there is 1 or 2 ptos issued at camp as a backup incase the kids don't make the roster out of camp |

In all likelihood, they didn't add enough goals in FA. But they also feel that they'll have increased scoring from within. Voracek alone should be looking at 10-15 more goals. Couturier staying healthy could mean he scores 15-20 goals. Giroux being healthy and freed from as heavy a two way role as he had to handle last year should mean more offense.
They can still add a guy like Hudler in free agency, too. Or they could swing a trade. But I think they're going to see what the kids they have on hand can do. If they need to add scoring in season, they can swing a trade, too.
By my guess, once they're done re-signing the RFAs, they're looking at between $3.3mm-$4mm in space. They want to keep about $2mm for flexibility. Maybe they are waiting to get Schenn to get signed and see where they stand. |

Exactly. They are looking for guys who will buy into and thrive playing Hak's system. If you look at their most successful teams; the Bullies, the Streak club, Keenan's finalists and even the 03-04 squad under Hitch and the 2010 bunch that made a run under Lavi, they all had one thing in common. Each and every one of them fully bought into the coaches system of play.
Hextall seems to be consistently sticking to his plan and he is trying to build a team that will excel in the coaches system. I'm fully on board with it. |

It's an approach that requires patience, too.
It's going to be an organizational thing. Look at the draft-guys that play solid, if not really strong, 200 foot games. Even the past drafts under Hextall, filled with guys who play two way hockey.
I was keen on Pirri, but the more I dug into it, the guy is a one trick pony. Had they signed him, Hakstol would have had his ass nailed to the bench. The same goes for a guy like Parenteau.
Of the guys left in FA, the only two I'd even consider are Jiri Hudler & Kris Versteeg, and them only if they came really cheap on one year deals. They don't bring the Flyers a sniper, but can score. |

Yeah, I'd be fine with either of the 2 you mentioned on a one year deal, but I'd be just as happy if they didn't sign anyone else. |

I'm fine if they do or don't. This is the season that will test patience. They made the playoffs last year, and if they don't this year, people will be frustrated. It's not necessarily a linear process.
I still think a trade or free agency next summer is more likely to land that sniper everyone wants. But the way they went about things this summer says that it's going to be another year of trying to compete, without going all out to contend.
That's expected, but there's a lot of folks going to be frustrated with that |
