We already have a bunch of "maybe" defenseman who can fit in on the bottom pairing. I don't see how Schultz or Schenn does anything but create more of a logjam on the blueline.

We need a shut down guy, Schenn fits it. Schultz could just be insurance. He didn't look too bad with PIT. Pair him back with Gardiner. Nothing to lose.

He's played like 20 nhl games the last 8 years. This isn't the KHL where Bochenski and Omark are leading scorers.

could be...but I think he's a lock. He should be. If he doesn't make it though, it'll probably be because someone else beat him out / deserves it more..

I don't think we acquire another top 4 dman without him, unfortunately, but I totally agree. He basically is our only top 6 winger. I'm hoping for:

JVR-Matthews-Brown/Marner & let Bozak play with Nylander & Brown/Marner

Only thing with JVR is he is at his max value now (presumably). His age would suggest he is in his prime, and his contract will never be better value than it is right now.

by holding onto JVR we are essentially wasting his most productive and best value years on a bottom feeder. Whereas other teams may see value in trading futures for him as they are in win now mode.

JVR likely has more value to us now as a trade chip than he would in the future. (Especially once his contract runs out and he gets a big raise)
