Did he get the bad hip - playing for the Leafs? If not, Leafs owe him nothing except a kick in the ass with a frozen boot. - winsix
With that logic the leafs don't owe horton anything either because he didn't get hurt with the leafs.
The leafs made bad signings, and to get rid of them they had to take back other teams bad signings.
Regardless, if you try to look at things from Cowen's perspective, it totally makes sense for him to argue that he is injured and fight the buy out. I would do the same, so would you. There are millions of dollars at stake.

Horton and Cowen - not the same situation. Cowen wanted to play for the Leafs last year - and was told the situation, Horton is an uninsured contract that the idiot CBJ could not afford to pay, the Leafs bough their way out of a bad contract with cash. This isn't the same. The pylon known as Cowen developed an injury when he was told by the Leafs of their plans.

This instant defensiveness about Leafs management, particularly in a market like Toronto, is still so weird to me.
Scott Wheeler @scottcwheeler 2m2 minutes ago
Leafs management didn't get fair value for Kessel, is risking a lot on Andersen, is in on Russell, signed Martin, questionable 2016 draft.

On coaching side, huge strides have been mirrored by riding Froese, Hunwick. If Hyman and Soshnikov are ahead of Brown, that's not nothing. |

Finally the point has been acknowledged.
I still maintain it doesn't hurt the Leafs much so who cares?

lol... kessel turned into andersen, kapanen, and rychel
and the pens took erixson and biggs off the leafs hands.
the results may not have been immediate... but in the end it was a pretty damn good deal. |

I tend to agree, Stamkos might have sped things up a year or so, but, that door is closed so we move on, take our lumps and develop what we have. Another lottery pick is now a strong possibility. A trade of the fleecing variety is still welcome - maybe with CBJ. |

I think the off season surgery sounds a bit sneaky IMO
Now the doctor who advised it could be under investigation, this could make for quite the feud.
Not that I care 1 iota about their money or Cowen |

good.
hal gill, jason blake, jeff finger, mike komisarek, tim connolly, david clarkson....... - Dozzer
Take Hal Gill off this list.
He made just ovef $2 million a year. He was a vet who played the PK, and 3rd line duties.
Leafs fans ran him out of town because he wasn't Paul Coffey.
The Penguins gave him important minutes in game seven of the Stanley Cup finals. |

i am in no rush... keeping the slow build pace will put something in place allowing the leafs to have sustained sucess (i hope) and not just have a fleeting window. |

Well then he can go to AHL. He doesn't even have to play for all I care. If the leafs do it right we won't even be aware that Cowen exists in october.

Also Gill and Halak dragged the Habs pretty far into the playoffs that 1 year.

He could be a free agent if bought out and if he chose that more difficult but more honorable route, he could easily make the same money. I don't blame Cowen either, some people cheat insurance companies, some are thieves and some work for their money. It's more a question of character, which is why I called him a cockroach. All that said, I think the Leafs will win this one in arbitration.

it isnt dishonourable to expect whats owed to you
and sign somewhere else? no (frank)ing way anyone signs him... and if somehow some gm got drunk enough to do so it certainly wouldnt be for 3 million
he is well within his rights... both morally and legally |
