I don't get the negativity of the signing. The cap hit will be negligable by the time we have to start doling out big contracts. It's not like we need the cap space for the next 2 years.
In the big picture, I love it. With a few exceptions, every single rookie on the team is going to have to fight for a spot held by an established, low end NHLer. If you can't beat out the old guy for the job, then you stay in he minors. The way it should be. Martin makes guys like Michalek and Greening utterly expendable. If kids beat them out for a job, put them on waivers and send them down. If they get claimed, then good for them.
The days of handing out jobs based on 'nobody else available' are over.
