Any sport involves a level of intimidation. Strong teams like the Hawks, Kings and Penguins can intimidate using there skill and resume to intimidate the opposition. The Leafs are not there at this time, but are trying to build a core that in the future will be the same.

In the mean time, they needed something in their lineup to provide some level of intimidation, as they had absolutely nothing, and Martin helps in that regard. In 4-5 years, hopefully it will be a different story.

Also to all the fans that are saying that having a guy like Martin doesn't prevent players on the opposition from doing stupid things, you are forgetting the other side of the equation. Having someone who has your back makes you grow 1-2 inches. Just think of being in a situation in a bar where you spilled your drink on some meat head. Now would you rather have done that while flying solo, or would you feel better doing that with your 6'3" 220 lbs friend standing behind you? I know what scenario I would prefer.
