The Jared Cowen matter remains in arbitration but the disputed cap space will not matter for now as Leafs can exceed cap for short term.

I would appear that if a young defenseman becomes available, we will either have to overpay or be outbid by EDM. (Who are apparently still looking for another Dman.)
