Hoss is in offensive decline but his overall game is terrific still. Maybe the long offseason helps him most of all.

Agreed....... that is a given

They like Teddy, I haven't heard his name lately but they've liked him in the past. Good guy, too. Put him in that Parenteau class.
- John Jaeckel

JJ,

What about Sam Gagner? Coming off of his worst season, which seems to be an anomaly since he had an extremely consistent career leading up to it. He is friends with Kane, may come dirt cheap...

Of course, this is encouraging. My new question is what is wrong with Mikkel Boedker that no one has thrown stupid money at him yet?
- RedFeather

I don't know. As far as I know, he is still unsigned. 99.9% certain. I know COL wanted to extend him. Might have something to do with the Landeskog rumors.

With respect, sir, I don't know, my wife is cool, but she's not going to tell me where to work.

Purcell is a solid winger. A right hander on the left side, kind of like Sharp. Think he would do well here.

Ugh, maybe? Again, court of last resort before you put kids in there who don't even project as top line players "someday", sure.

I think the Hawks are still aiming higher, will have to see.

Cuz he's a speed skill perimeter guy who's done nothing at 5 on 5. He passes a 1-2 game eye test but not much more.

I guess it's time for me to add some perspective here.

1) The Hawks are NOT done.
2) DON'T believe what a GM says on 7/1. It is ALL posturing.
3) The salary cap, at present, does not look good, BUT . . .
4) And this is a big one . . .

The Hawks did NOT sign Brian Campbell, even at a relative bargain, so "Soupy can come home," or for some kind of media feel-good story.

And they did NOT sign him because they felt 4D was their most glaring need.

They signed him because he came at a tremendous value and yes he makes the defense deeper and better ATER they signed Kempny, because—MORE IMPORTANTLY—they fully intend to be a BETTER team in 2016-17 than they were win 2015-16.

And although Stanley is chirping how he likes the team today—Good GOD—that is CLASSIC GM posturing.

He doesn't.

He KNOWS he has a huge hole at 1LW. He knows he probably needs at least 1 veteran lower line winger.

They are working on it.

The strategy, I am 99% sure, is to wait out a Vanek or a Hudler and see if they will come on a 1-year, pad your stats playing with JT and Hoss, and cash in next year kinda deal.

OR, they will move a big contract, maybe Crawford's, and use the cap savings to go get a top free agent LW, who the Hawks LOVE, who was very interested in coming to Chicago last year, who no one has mentioned the last week or so:

Mikkel Boedker

OR, failing all that, they will grab a PA Parenteau from the clearance bin and plug him in there—a guy who can score 20 goals and 45 points and play with Toews and Hossa—and allow the kids to DEVELOP where they belong and Panik to play where he BELONGS.

PATIENCE. Don't believe the BS. They are not done yet.

- John Jaeckel

Great update JJ.......... hope you're right on Boedker, wanted him over Ladd at the TDL. Posturing is the key.

Why haven't we heard his name yet? Thought he was going to get big bucks, something weird going on with him?

Haven't even heard his name in any rumor.

Edit; Jeez, walk away for 5 mins and you miss the boat here today

2 people there don't belong in top 6. Hossa in decline and Panik couldn't play for Toronto. Both are true bottom six guys now if we had the cap space to replace them up top.
- Hawkytalk

Hossa, barring a MAJOR and unforeseen deck reshuffling, is a top 6 RW on this team. Don't kid yourself. if they can't afford Jamie McGinn, they can't afford a player equal to or better than Hossa to replace him in the top 6.

Well, Rico, he's better on Toews and Hoss' flank than most of what has gotten INSANE money today.

The Hawks LOVE him. There are reasons for that. No idea what his present status is though.

Exactly! I´m expecting a bounce back season (offensively) from him if he can stay healthy.

It would not be good, but if they got someone like Landeskog in return it would be more palatable.
- vabeachbear

Also, Landeskog probably costs less than Panarin starting in 2017-18, but he costs $4m this year.

Nope option 2 (75% sure) option 3 if Buffalo were to offer sheet them.

I'll say this...if we can stare at Hawks cap problem, imagine guys who do this for a living and may pitch it high enough to force bowman to make TWO trades to clear the room.

Again, assuming Panarin duplicates his 2015-16 season at worst.

- SteveRain

To round this out, the teams that actually have the picks to make an offer over $5.5m (probably something like $5.7m next summer) are:

Anaheim
Arizona
Buffalo
Calgary
Carolina
Columbus
Dallas
Florida
Los Angeles
Montreal
Nashville
New Jersey
New York Islanders
Philadelphia
Pittsburgh
St. Louis
Tampa Bay
Toronto
Vancouver
Winnipeg

After the trade deadline, it's more likely, that several of these teams will have traded their 2017 1st, 2nd, or 3rd. The list will shrink as the year goes on.

How many of these teams can afford the actual cost? Many are already in similar salary cap situations to the Blackhawks (LA, Columbus, Pittsburgh). Many more are going to be in worse shape next year than they are currently trying to sign their own RFAs (Tampa Bay).

How many of these teams are willing to part with 3 or 4 draft picks on top of that cost, especially considering that the term maxes out at 5 years (e.g., a 7 year/$49m offer equals $9.8m AAV for compensation purposes)?

Panik will be on the third line. I would not assume he is at 1LW.

I would assume the Hawks, one way or another, will find someone who works there.

- John Jaeckel

You think they might just say (frank) it for now and wait till the TDL midseason to find the right guy?

If they don't improve the forward situation the TDL may not matter.
