ALL of these contracts have been absurd overpays. ALL of them. I haven't seen one contract (save Campbell's) that has made any sort of sense from a non-overpay perspective. Lucic, Ladd, Backes, Nielsen, Helm, Reimer, etc ...

Stan got his d-man to fill the void left since Oduya left, and this is arguably the strongest and deepest defensive group that we have had to date. That's something the front should absolutely be proud of accomplishing.

Go bargain hunting for forward depth.

From the local CGY press - the reason why CGY didn't tender Colborne an offer was that they were afraid/expecting his arbitration settlement would come in at $3M+. Both team and player are talking about getting a deal done - but it will be in excess of his current $1.25M. I like his size and style of play - but you would have to expect paying him at least $2M. Doesn't seem to fit for the Hawks.
