when you bury him in the AHL his cap hit is $100K now we are going to have to have cap hits of $133 and $183? Why did we give him over $950? why did we give him a 2 year deal. that $183 hurts for next year. That was just A dumb dumb deal by Stan and now its costing us a extra $210K of cap hits over 2 years. that makes no sense. just take the $100K cap hit this year. - kmw4631
If he's in the AHL, then he has to play. Buying him out shows how much they think he can do that. They are paying more for him to just go away. Burn. |

LOL at Staal. Learn something from Soupy, a guy who can actually still skate....find a good fit for your lats few years. Staal got embarrassed by the Penguins speed in the playoffs. - kwolf68
I have a feeling Staal's demands are going to come down precipitously by Sunday. |

Hawks D core is LOADED. Forward situation is very scary, but maybe they think 9 or 10 guys fighting for 3 or 4 spots will show us who can play. Also wouldn't be shocked to see a smaller signing when the early period clears out. - kwolf68
Can Colborne play LW? Might be McGinn lite |

I'm stunned by this. I thought (as several here also thought) that they simply bury him this year at cost of about $100k. How does it make sense to buy out and take on cap hit of $300k+ over 2 years?
I hope there's something here I'm missing, like maybe someone to grab him off waivers).
Otherwise, I'd sure like Stan to explain this to me.

Brouwer to CGY. Four years, $4.5M AAV. - JRoenick97
Bob's your uncle.
What'd I say?
Brouwer: $4-4.5mil per.
Campbell: 1 year, $2-2.2mil |

That's probably the most reasonable signing $/term so far today. Good for Brouwer and good for CGY. |

Michael Grosso has hit on everything today. Not sure if he was the first one but he's calling these signings before any of the major media outlets are. |

Yep. Considering all the angst and teeth nashing we're doing here about forward depth and "trying not to suck" as it were. If you're a STL fan - you have to be feeling concerned about Backes, Brouwer and other departures - right?
The salary cap is truly more about fending off entropy rather than building and growing. - Chief4Feathers
If I'm an owner of a competitive, big-market franchise, the cap has to be my #1 issue to correct. Teams are penalized for drafting and developing players. You basically have to accept that your talent is always heading out the door, so you just hope to have the right mix for 1-2 years, then churn back to the bottom.
The Toi(let)-yotes are another great example of the cap at work. Want to trade for the rights for a cap hit for a dude who will never play in the NHL again just to reach the floor? No problem!!!! It's ok if the league is propping your franchise up....right???? |

He no longer had any future in Chicago. That simple. - John Jaeckel
I agree, but the $$$ doesn't make sense. 2 years of cap hits instead of 1 and larger cap hits instead of burying him in Rockford/Europe. |

That is my thought. I don't like using any money when you don't have to, but for the guarantee that joker will never play in Chicago again, well worth it. I am STUPEFIED he resurfaced last year in the playoffs of all times. The Rundblad thing was dumber than trading for Kimo Timmonen and that was pretty dumb. |

Seems more and more, the Hawks felt out Vanek, Hudler and McGinn (and Staal up til yesterday), to see who might have interest, then probably bargained them against each other. Not sur ether succeeded. if so, you will see a singing announced shortly for not more than $4 million per for one season, and maybe as low as $3 million per.
If NOT, then I think that job opening will not be filled for at least a couple of days or more. - John Jaeckel
My bet and I'm fine with that.

Source says #Blackhawks don't expect any other significant moves today. Stan Bowman teleconference at 12:30 p.m. seems to support that. - JRoenick97

Exactly, and if he doesn't want to play in Rockford, tough poop. Let him walk out. Case closed. |
