Anyhow, FWIW, I don't love or hate what the Flyers did today. This is still a team in the middle of a retooling process and the progress isn't always going to be linear. They have several young players, both on the roster and in the system that will hopefully taking steps forward this season and Hextall is being prudent in making sure the team has options and the freedom to allow those young players to slide into bigger roles.

Weise is a solid 3rd/4th liner. He brings size, a bit of offense and solid two way ability. Gordon is a limited PK/faceoff guy. Weise got a bigger deal that I'm happy with, but it's a workable deal that isn't a drastic overpay. Gordon's underlying numbers are worrisome, but the Flyers PK was bad last year and if he can help it while not causing the team to dip at 5 on 5 it will be an improvement.

The key here is for the younger guys to show progress and the ability to step up and fill a top 6 role and to take on more responsibility in the defensive side of the ice. The progression of young players, whether it's guys like Laughton, Cousins or Gostisbehere or guys like Provorov, Sanheim and Morin, is vital. Young players don't always progress at the same rate and they can't all simply be handed a role & be expected to fill it immediately.

Right now, Hextall is not making sexy moves, but he's making moves to continue the process and help the team develop.

I am really hoping Leier wins a spot on the team in camp

For some reason I can't shake the feeling that now would be a good time to dangle MDZ just to see if you can get Boston or EDM to overpay. I just have this feeling that so long as AMac is here and Schenn needs to be extended that MDZ is going to be looking for too much.

Idk, I'd personally like to keep him but I feel as if Boston and EDM are really desperate right now.

Would explain why he wasn't signed.

Detroit has a logjam at forward and a thin defense with what they've done in the last week.

Bill Meltzer gets it! On Gordon

"Those looking at offensive numbers or Corsi are barking up the wrong tree. That's not where his value comes from and is not why he's a veteran 693 NHL games."

I thought our goal was to add speed and scoring? Vanek at 2.6 and Grabner at 1.65 would have been ideal, no?

Not really.

The goal is to add guys that fit the system. Plus Vanek had all of 4 more goals than Weise last year

I wouldn't mind it. I'd like to see Konecny and Provorov both stick.

Pinotch just said Hextall said they tried to move contracts both at the draft and today but no takers

It wasn't goal scoring with size and speed hexy said we needed?

I didn't realize we had to retool our 4th line, arguable the best line we had in the playoffs.

Then throw them on the list too.

MDZ would be a good option for the teams scared off by the haul St Louis is looking for with Shattenkirk.

Again. Id be just as happy keeping him. But if it looks like Hextall is going to have a hard time extending him he should absolutely gauge the league's interest while GM's are desperate.

I personally would not be looking to move Del Zotto right now.

have to think Streit would be moveable at the deadline or at some point during the season being he will only be making 2 million.

The 4th line had a couple good games in the playoffs, but for most of the year it was ineffective. The bottom six had to improve.

As for adding goal scoring and speed, yeah they are needed. But Hextall also said he wasn't going to bind the team to a long term deal or add a guy who didn't fit. What good is adding a one dimensional guy like Vanek if the coach benches him?

That's the case against a kid like Brandon Pirri, too. Hakstol wants guys who can play a 200 foot game. If you can't you're going to sit. Look at Medvedev or Gagner last year

A two way contract is about salary in the NHL and AHL. He would still go through waivers

Then I guess we will continue to struggle to score because two way goal scorer's don't grow on tree's.. and if we're going to hold our breath until someone like that becomes available for a price that fits into our cap space we will be holding our breath for a long time.

Not saying I love Vanek but when shopping for budget goal scoring you take what you can get.

Stephen Whyno ✔@SWhyno
Dale Weise's contract with #Flyers pays him $2.75M next season, $2.55M in 2017-18, $2.35M in '18-19 and $1.75M in '19-20. Boyd Gordon $950K.

- Feanor

Hearing him talk on Nhl.com. and seeing this makes me ok with Weise. Could do without Gordon. IMHO!
