correct me if I am wrong and I am sure someone will but first and second yr pros do not have to be protected
- nastyflyergirl

Laughton does cause this will be his third year as a pro after age 20.

Flyers can protect 7 forwards. G, Jake, Schenn, Couturier, and Simmonds seem likely.

Then they have to choose to protect two out of Weise, Raffl, Laughton and Cousins. If Raffl and Laughton outplay Weise this year, there's a reasonable chance Weise ends up in Vegas. I think he's a more appealing pick than Read or MacDonald.

Stephen Whyno ✔@SWhyno
Dale Weise's contract with #Flyers pays him $2.75M next season, $2.55M in 2017-18, $2.35M in '18-19 and $1.75M in '19-20. Boyd Gordon $950K.

- Feanor

so Gordon's deal is 100% capable of being buried if someone beats him out. so what is the problem?

weise was just on the NHL network. Liked what he said. said that 12 teams were interested. most offered 3 yrs and a few 4. chose the flyers because he liked what Hextall had to say and felt he fits in well. He is happy to play wherever he is needed and is capable of sliding up and down the lineup, can play on the PK and PP. said that a few players talked well of Hakstol and Briere talked up the city.

I'm upset we didn't value Ryan White. Solid faceoff man even though he was a winger. One of very few tough and gritty players on this team. He was sadly also the most threatening offensive player on the 4th line.

I would have kept him. Good teammate, worked hard, took less 2 years in a row to be here.

I would have kept white and signed weise

Would hate to lose Cousins that quickly, if he does play the full NHL season next year, if that is what happens

Not sure 150-ish games would be enough to evaluate

You guys in the circle jerk of hatred over MacDonald sure get put out when someone doesn't agree he's the worst dman in the league or whatever.

For the record, I've said many time 4/18 (6, 5, 4, 3) was the biggest contract Holmgren should have offered him. But even a rich club like the Flyers can't afford to frontload every deal on the books.

He should be happy he got a deal on Day 1...I liked how he competes but I don't know why anyone would tel him he has a lot of leverage on the open market, if that was the advice he was given
- AllInForFlyers

Hexy mentioned wanting to resign him several times surely flyers offered him at least that if not more

that is correct.
I was wondering what the status of Laughton and Cousins will be at that point

- nails

I believe they both have to be protected as 3rd year pros

He's better defensively than any one in the bottom 6, which is why Hextall signed him.

There is next to no chance Vegas takes Read. I dont know why people keep saying it. Guy is gassed and will only have one year left on his deal. If you were the GM would you take Read or a kid you can control in Cousins or a helpful player under contract for three years in Weise?

There isn't a doubt in my mind Hexy offered him more than that. 1 year 1 mil is peanuts by today's standards.

White sure mis-read the market.

no doubt. you know if he was willing to take that with the flyers it would have been a done deal.

I think you're right, his agent probably asked for too much, stuck to his guns and got less. Apparently you can't play hard ball if your at the bottom of the totem pole.

guess I have changed my mind.
go the 3 d man and 7 forwards route just so you can get the extra forward.
Gudas, and MDZ
G, Jake, Simmonds, Cout, Schenn. Then I would protect Cousins and Laughton and expose the big contracts left over (raffl, Read, Weise, Amac)
They won't take Amac, so one of those forward spots will come open, freeing up 2M of cap space to be filled by and ELC.
Again, Hexy is brilliant

its going to be interesting to see who vegas selects. there will be plenty of 3rd yr prospects left unprotected (wouldn't Haag have to be protected?) and you have to figure Vegas won't take 30 NHL players being you only roster 23 players

Hagg is protected. They'll have their pick of Cousins, Read, Weise most likely
