Two questions. First: What do you think Vanek would cost now? Second: What would it take to get Dustin Brown and is that someone we could be interested in? - Flyers1218
Why are we asking about players that stopped mattering 3 years ago? |

Can they afford, and would they be willing to take, a 5.25 million cap hit for that player? - BiggE
At 50% retained possibly? I can't speak confidently on what other plans Sharks have with free agency so not sure if even a 50% would be attractive for them. But, Streit does fit their description of need quite nicely |

Get ready for some fierce debates on both sides.
Like debating the weather.
Hextall is not bluffing when he says they're going to have earn their NHL spot. By "earn it," he basically means by playing to standard similar to what Gostisbehere did in the weeks following his NHL recall last season. Anything less, including "not looking out of place" in preseason games is not going to be enough.
Doesn't that assume Provorov and Konecny are given significant playing time with the Flyers to prove whether they belong or not? Doesn't bother me either way since we have Hagg (hopefully) and Morin knocking on the door with Sanheim standing right behind them along with a few other D prospects who might stick or be ready for a callup.
I hope we get a free agent faceoff and pk specialist who can also chip in some goals from time to time. G needs to be used sparingly or not at all on the PK to keep him fresh as the season wears on. And we certainly don't need him out there getting in lanes and attempting to block shots. No more PK for G. |

No I think he deserved to make the team....even you can't think those 14 games in the AHL did anything to help his game . - landros 2
Lots of factors go into players making a team. I certainly don't think it hurt him going back. I think if a player like Provorov shows that he's NHL ready then he should be in the NHL. The problem is that it's not always easy to determine that in the pre season and in training camp. I think the damage done to a player who is promoted to the NHL too early, can be far more detrimental to a player, then sending a player back for another year of juniors. |

I'm going to disagree here. The 14 games with the Phantoms helped him because 1) he was coming off the ACL injury and still needed time to get back up to 100%, 2) people were talking about the goals he scored in the preseason but overlooking the fact that he had a subpar defensive preseason. He didn't even start out all that well with the Phantoms. He ramped up near the end and carried it right through his callup. If he'd started the year in the NHL, it might have been a whole different story.
Also, while his rookie pro year was something of a lost season because of the ACL, he went through the development camps, went through training camp, had Terry Murray and Kjell Samuelsson in his ear reiterating the things (which he already knew because he has a good head on his shoulders) the things he needed to work on.
I talked with Gostisbehere about those very things back when he was already getting sick of being asked daily by everyone else about his point streak and he went on in detail about just how much development he'd been through between the time of leaving Union and his second NHL callup. Even his ACL rehab and putting on 10 pounds of muscle were couched by him in a development framework.
He bought into that process, very much to his credit.
So, no, the 14 AHL games alone were not a magical thing that turned him into a Calder finalist but it was part of what got him to the point he's at now.
Come to think of it, I should blog about it

Streit is the type of player that would fetch a 1st or maybe two 2nds at the TDL when teams are desperate to add pieces for a playoff run. Just look at the hauls from Kimmo, Coby, and Grossmann. I wouldn't retain any of Streit's salary unless I was getting something back thats better than those picks. |

2016-17 Breakout Candidate: Scott Laughton
http://thehockeywriters.c...candidate-scott-laughton/ - Feanor
That would be nice. I know it's probably unfair given his age and lack of development time in the bigs, but I know I gloss over Laughton and what he might bring to the Flyers this season. But there's no doubt the potential is there. Hopefully he's ready to take the next step in his pro development. |

Considering you've talked to the player....lol....can't disagree with that. I just thought out of the gate he was easily the best d man we had "with the puck" ...and to me that's a guy you can work with. I'm fine with patience....I'm like everyone else here....I want them to be successful ...today. I think in some cases they are too patient. My take on Ghost might be different if the Flyers had a solid d core. I do somewhat disagree with the notion that those 14 games had anything to do with his success up in Philly...but hey I'm not going to disagree that the kid had success after looking at how it went down....it is a forum to talk hockey.
